Plunging necklines a no-no at masses

MANILA (Reuters) - The Catholic Church has issued guidelines on what Filipinos should wear to mass in Manila after some parishioners complained about distracting skimpy attire. "This is to remind people that it would be good to come in appropriate clothing because other people are scandalized," said Peachy Yamsuan of the archdiocese of Manila on Monday.

"It is for the other worshippers who are distracted. You come to the church to pray and if your eyes wander and you see inappropriate clothes, well, it does not add to your spiritual goals."

The majority of the Philippines' 87 million people are Catholic and worshippers throng sweltering churches each Sunday, although some devotees attend religious services in air-conditioned malls, giving the ceremony an informal air.

But Manila's archdiocese has issued posters advising women not to wear short skirts, revealing necklines and spaghetti-strap tops to mass, while men are warned against shorts, caps and basketball jerseys. Instead, female parishioners are encouraged to wear dresses or long skirts and blouses and men are asked to wear shirts, trousers or jeans.

Lots of good LIBERAL Catholics around. Personally, I won't put those down. Knew some priests who went to prison for helping people with water while they were crossing the desert in search of the promised land. The illegal EMPLOYERS making the promises that tempted people to cross that hostile terrain were not sent to prison, but water-bottle toting Catholic priests and people who tried to be human beings sure got in a lot of trouble.

I don't get why the Catholic Church is immune from the same ridicule that the fundies, Scientologists, and Mormons get on here quite frequently and without comment. Because there are Catholics on this site? Too damn bad. I know there are Mormons and I'd bet there are Scientologists. Boo Hoo, someone says something bad about the catholic chruch and its memebers. How about those members stop giving money to an institution that holds women is less regard than males, has an embarrassing (and I would argue "immoral") amount of wealth that it does nothing with to help the needy, is extremely bigoted about gays and homosexuals, and covers up sexual abuse by its priests and actually promotes those that were active in the cover up just to name a few of the problems? That's right, I said it. How about that?

24. I only get offended at broadbrush attacks

when it is leveled at the whole of the church. I do not have a problem with attack on the politics of anyone on the Rightwing. But when you call everyone who goes to Chuch a boob... it is patently offensive.

Now having said that do I defend Mormons? No because I do not share their tenets. It does not mean I attack mormons or that I think venomous comment are appropriate. But I simply have not notices. Do I think Mormonism is a "cult" No. But I think reasoned theological issues are legitimate areas to converse on... I do wish it would not take place on DU.

I don't know enough about Scientology to comment if ans when attacke are made.

edit to add: I continue to be amazed at some of the low-cut outfits the women wear to church here in the so called Bible Belt. I just think church is not the place for that. Have some respect for the Almighty.

I say if a person wants to gawk at some cleavage, go to the beach. Or the mall. But not in church.

We had an outdoor chapel at the nudist club where my wife and I met. We were going to get married there but a lot of our guests didn't want to go to the club. Church in the buff! See boobs and whatever else god/goddess created. If you can't pray in the nude when can you pray?
