Where EXACTLY is this Tahoe fire?
I've been there, just this passed January; stayed in Tahoe City. I was just checking out "Meyers California" on Google Earth, and it's nowhere near Lake Tahoe. On CNN.com they have slide shows of the fire...one by a guy who was in Tahoe City...but Tahoe City is way up on the northwest corner of the lake, again, nowhere near the fire area. Another pic is supposedly listed as Truckee, which is even farther away from SLC. There are pictures of the fire practically right along the edge of the lake, though.

Best I can tell looking at Google Earth, the fire is actually between the lake (South Lake Tahoe) and the Kirkwood Mountain area. So why the hell are they saying it's in Meyers, California, which appears to be many, many miles away?

I'm confused. Any early-rising locals wanna help out a confused east coaster?

2. I've been annoyed by the absence of a MAP, too
because I have friends in the area.

I guess they think we're too dumb to read maps.

4. Thanks. That confused me more.
One poster says the fire crossed Hiway 50 around upper Truckee. But Truckee is even farther away and more to the north than Tahoe City is! How did it cross a hiway in SLC from all the way up in Truckee? And why are there TWO Meyers in California?

6. The Truckee River empties into and flows out of LakeTahoe
It's entry point is at South Shore and it exits the lake at Tahoe City. So Upper Truckee is at South Lake Tahoe.

I thought he was talking about the town of Truckee, and I was totally baffled! Thanks for clearing that up for me.

5. California has this weird naming convention.
Sometimes neighborhoods or districts particularly in large cities like L.A. or hamlets within unincorporated areas are known by a name that is the same as a separate town or city elsewhere in the state. "Brentwood, CA" was the dateline for the O.J. Simpson trial, but that Brentwood is an area within L.A. The municipality of Brentwood is in suburban San Francisco.

11. No, actually.
Primarily, from what I can see, in the "residential" areas, the local folks, not the multi-million-dollar resort homes.

12. The Reno Gazette Journal has maps, stories, pictures...
It should answer all of your questions about location, price of the homes destroyed, etc.

14. I can tell you where the smoke is
Cough.

For some reason smoke from any fire west of the Rockies ends up in the Napa Valley.
