Hispanic votes for the Dems in 2008? I would look forward to being disabused of these notions.

4. You could argue that the Dems wouldn't mind looking Hispanic friendly. I suspect
the potentially "amnestied" have relatives/friends who can vote in 2008.

3. Cheap labor-YES. Hipanic votes for Dems-YES.
Further increases in overpopulation in a declining working middle class job market-YES. YOU'VE GOT THE PICTURE-YES!

5. It is a real bad deal for immigrants
Both the GOP and the DLC want the slave labor which the deal provides.

No one cares about voting habits. With caging techniques and voting software, the immigration bill is not a factor.

6. Yes, because they're getting such a great deal now, being exploited
without any hope of becoming part of the fabric of society. And the alternative--going back to Mexico to live in utter poverty--is that a great deal too? I have little sympathy for these illegals, and yet, between the xenophobia-vs.-corporate greed dynamic of the right, and the union/blue-collar protectionism of the left, they are kind of trapped in a no-man's land. What to do with them, considering we aren't about to deport 12 million of them?

9. There are two sides fighting this yes, but it is not the left and the right
It is a fight between the right grassroots bigots and the corporate elites.

The progressive left has no power in this do do anything.

10. You are right. We are not about to forcibly deport 12 million people,
and no progressive is going to sit still if we try to make the illegal immigrants' lives here so miserable through no jobs, no apartments, no education, no health care, so that they willingly return to the abject poverty they thought they had escaped from. The picture of millions of Hispanics walking and riding back over the border would make us look like total jackasses to the rest of the world.

We have two choices. Either legalize them or make them continue to live here with no legal status.

7. Unfortunately, it's probably the best deal the immigrants can hope for.
Hopefully, in the future, the more draconian parts will be removed.

11. I agree. It's better than nothing.

And we can hope for a future with more Democrats in office--so the laws can be moderated. (Not as a result of the bill--as a result of more Americans deciding that voting Republican is idiotic.)

If the bill fails, the undocumented workers will remain fearful of agitating for better treatment. And those who now weep for The American Worker can return to bitching about "Big Labor."

(Besides: Kay Bailey Hutchison is agin' it!)

8. International Border Day
When every illegal gets up, packs up their family, and heads for the border. Freak this country right the hell out. That's what they need to do.

Yes, many people are playing games with these immigrants' lives and it is sickening.
