Since the vote on the Iraq war funding without timetables, repugs are coming out |
|
slowly saying that the strategy isn't working
Where the Democrats should have stood together on this bill, and stood together, they split their vote
Now republicans like luger are coming out saying we should start drawing our troops down
Because many Democrats did not listen to Feingold, Kucinich, and others, they may soon find themseleves in the position of catch-up

1. The Democrats cannot stand together, because not all of them AGREE |
|
There are a number of different viewpoints on the war within the Democratic caucus--everything from 'leave, and leave NOW' to 'withdraw to the perimeter' to 'As they stand up, we stand down' and so on.
The Democratic caucus isn't 'in lockstep' on this issue. Neither are the GOP. Where you stand depends on where you sit...if you've got a body armor or body bag factory in your district, the war is good for business.
Don't shoot the messenger, but not everyone agrees with the obvious need to get the fuck out of there.

2. how exactly does Lugar's "coming out" put Democrats in a position of catch up |
|
Democrats, virtually unanimously, supported exactly what Lugar seems to be suggesting but were blocked by a repub veto and repub votes to sustain that veto. If anyone is playing catch up, its the repubs who are trying to figure out how to explain their shift from a position of agreeing with the Democrats proposal -- a timeline to get the troops home (going so far as calling it surrender, etc) -- to supporting that very concept.

3. Democrats are schizophrenic. Try getting the Progressive Caucus to agree with the New Dems about war |
|
That's asking for a tall order.
