Shit head

See how none of these attack her based on her gender, or her ability to conform to narrowly defined gender roles? Is that so hard to do?

8. Isn't asshole normally reserved for the male species?
I almost never hear anyone refer to a female in that manner.

I apply descriptive terms to the individual person, regardless of their sex. I can think of several other words to describe Ann Coulter, and a few of them would probably really put you on edge.

It isn't a reflection of women in general, it's a reflection of one woman, namely Ann Coulter.

And, for the record, I'm still not certain it is a woman. Or human, for that matter.

13. Asshole is gender-neutral.
If you use any sort of gender slur against women, it's a reflection of women's oppression, not of one woman. Just like when she uses the fag word to describe Edwards, it's not a lone insult against him, it embodies contempt for all gay people, and carries the weight of a long history of abuses against the entire group.

23. I think there's a difference.
When you call a gay person the F word, it is an insult to all gay people because that word transcends all sexes and lumps them all together and demeans them as a group of people identified by their sexual preference.

But calling a woman a b*tch is not representative of all women, because not all women are, for instance, crabby, nasty, pieces of sh!t who spew venom and hatred everytime they move their lips.

But some are. And Coulter, very definately, is.

I have enormous respect for women, and I have some very close friends who are women. I'll ask them if my calling Ann Coulter a b!tch is oppressive to them. That certainly isn't my intention. In fact, I'll try to call them tonight.

32. That's swell that you have some friends that are women.
There are women right here, right now, that are telling you directly that they perceive this as an insult to women. Why are you discounting their views?

If a woman tells you they hear in that word the history of gender slurs being used as hatred against women, if they tell you it is tied to rape scenes, to violence against women, if they tell you this is the history of the word, to attack women as women, you should listen to that, not argue against it.

If you don't understand it or agree with it, that's okay. Maybe it will sink in later, maybe not. But listen to those voices, because they are speaking out of their own direct experience and knowledge.

If you call some other woman on the phone and she tells you it is not offensive to her, that does not erase the history of other women. I'll tell you right now some women hear the history in the word, and others don't - other women use it themselves.

It's a word that is, in fact, NOT only used at crabby, nasty, pieces of sh!t who spew venom and hatred everytime they move their lips. It's a word used against women in anger for any perceived offense and sometimes their actions have nothing to do with being the target of that speech. You don't think the right uses that word against Cindy Sheehan, against Hillary Clinton, against every left-leaning woman who speaks out? You don't think the left uses it against all the Bush women, Cheney's wife, every republican female commentator?

It's used by all sides, against all women.

75. I spoke to 2 friends last night.
They both said that term was not offensive to them in any way, nor did they feel it was oppressive in any way. In fact, both of them said that description was a fair one for the particular person in question (Coulter), and one of them even said the c word applied in her case.

I guess the difference is they know me and you don't. I do detect some condescension in your post, so I'll just leave it at that. Some people just like to fight and argue with others. I don't. And when another person gets rude, insulting, or condescending with me, they have lost their opportunity to change my mind or opinion.

Enough said. I'll try to remember what you've said, and think twice before I use the b word again.

80. It's not about "knowing you."
The history of the word is not changed by your intent when you personally use that word.

It's about understanding the history of the word and the context it's often used in.

Yes, I was a little condescending in my previous post, because that "I have some friends who are women" was so much like "I'm not a racist, I have a black friend."

I'm not calling YOU a misogynist. I am saying that WORD is misogynistic, and thus it shouldn't be used.

If I talk to two black friends and they tell me the N word doesn't offend them, that doesn't mean it's not a racist term with a history of oppression.

Next time you have a disagreement with one of those women, try using the B**** word on her, in anger. I'm guessing you'll see a difference between the reaction you'd get with "shut up, dammit" and "shut up, b****." That was the case with another woman here on DU who uses that word and swears it's not offensive, but she started a whole thread about being angry that it was used against her. Not angry that others were mad at her, but angry specifically that they used that word.

Some people haven't examined why that is. Some have.

33. "They're all bitches."
My partner's friend said this to him one bitter morning not too long ago, referring to all women. And I think this might explain why it really is a woman-hating term, not just a descriptive term like "musician" or "stepmother."

Now don't get me wrong: I sometimes slip up and use the B word myself. It's a decades-long habit. But something about the "there's nice women and then there are bitches" argument reminds me of a white, racist friend of mine from high school. He used to say, "There are good blacks and then there are n*****s." He didn't think the N word was racist, just descriptive. You see what I'm getting at?

We could care less about her feelings -- it's her gender we don't want denigrated because that affects all women because all women share her gender AND all women are and can be demeaned when women you don't like are so easily put down that way. 50. Sorry, saracat -- you contribute to a climate of woman-hating by
doing so, and there's no two ways about it. Probably all the worse because YOU are a woman, you give permission to men to speak in those terms as well.

I confess that I myself use the word bitch: to exactly one person on the entire planet (my husband), and only very, very occasionally -- literally once or at most twice a year, and it always makes me feel guilty for it while I'm doing it and afterwards, so much so that I've pretty well resolved not to do it any more.

Please rethink this. Your hatred of her doesn't have to -- and shouldn't -- have anything to do with her gender (and my gender and your gender, and our daugthers' and sisters' gender).

Please.

Gonzalez a spic or wetback? Andrew Sullivan a queer or fag?

What, you don't?

WHY THE HELL NOT??????????

Don't they "deserve" it? It doesn't harm anyone ELSE, does it?

Of course it does. Hate langauge creates a climate of HATE where minorities, women, GLBT people can be harmed with impunity.

NO ONE, no matter how "bad" deserves to be denigrated, demeaned and humiliated on the basis of their race, sex, sexual orientation.

When we go to war, we have to crate horrible bigoted names for our enemies so that we can kill them -- gooks, ragheads, kinks, jerries and japs. When Hitler started demonizing the Jews -- and you know where THAT ended up -- he and his propagandists used language to convey their lack of humanity, calling them vermin, rats, etc.

THIS KIND OF DEHUMANIZATION, these hate words, cannot help but harm ALL women. If ANY woman can be called those things, ALL women can. The Queen of England isn't exempt from misogynist hate language.

If you don't want women killed just because they are women (4 a day in domestic violence alone), if you don't want them raped and molested (as adults and children), you have to stop supporting and enabling the belief that because of our gender alone we don't deserve respect. BEING A WOMAN IS NOT LESSER. Quit agreeing with those who want to make us so.

YOU don't respect women as a class, yet you yourself are a woman. Look how well the hate language and misogynist attitudes and beliefs and practices have worked on you.

The point is: insult people all you want EXCEPT on the basis of their race, sex, sexual orientation. Capice?

57. Hatemongering Harpy or Lying Troll Ok?
Harpy with the y is defined as a predatory person. It can also mean a shrewish woman. Harpie is a monster in Greek mythology with the head and torso of a woman and claws of a bird. Is there wiggle room on words that apply to both sexes? Harpy is one of my favorite pejoratives. I could always use clown instead. Problem is I like clowns. She's much too vicious to be a clown. Is pit bull okay? She does remind me of an ill-tempered inbred dog. Rabid harpy or Rabid pit bull. Hard to decide.
