Walk in their shoes: codepink street installation
Ran into this on 14th St outside of a cafe; it's got a bunch of shoes and the names of Iraqis killed during the invasion and occupation.

I don't know if they have a lot of these; it's really powerful though.

4. There's something about shoes
Out of all articles of clothing people wear, it's shoes that get the visceral reactions when used. A lone shoe on the side of the road is a cause for mystery that someone's lost shirt or sock could never be. An exposed sole of a shoe is a grave insult to many cultures, far exceeding nakedness. And there's something odd and instinctive when you see a display like this - a pile of shoes is never a good thing. What is it, about the shoe, that makes them so personal-seeming, over, say, hats or underwear?

6. From Code Pink: "The Empty Shoes of War"

The Empty Shoes of War

by Alison Flensburg

Here are the shoes of a silent soldier,
no longer polished bright,
Here are the shoes of a little girl,
who lost her life last night.

THese fancy shoes? They're wedding shoes
that will never see a wedding day.
These scruffy shoes? They're running
shoes of a boy who tried to run away.

Look hard and long at these empty
shoes. Think long and hard about
war. Think about those who will never,
ever, love and laugh, marry and be merry,
or wear these empty shoes...
anymore.

January 26th- Walk In Their Shoes In D.C.--6,500 Shoes!

CODEPINK recently displayed the largest and very moving shoe exhibit
during the J27 Mandate for Peace mobilization in Washington D.C.

Have you seen the devastating John Hopkins report revealing that over 655,000 Iraqis have died
since our invasion and the polls show that the overwhelming majority of Iraqis want us to leave?
Shoes, like the pair above representing the 3-year-old daughter of Hussein al Tarish, help people
visualize unspeakable pain and suffering this war has inflicted on the Iraqi people.

The goal of this display is to show politicians who still support this war that they must see
the consequence of their votes to fund war and 'stay the course'. There is still a lot of work
to do, but CODEPINK organizers around the world (even in Bahrain!) are constantly asking all to
"Walk In Their Shoes" with this somber shoe intallation.
