D) HOW TO GET PRESS
Tips to Make Your Sponsored Screening a Media Event:
* Ask a local politician or notable who supports single-payer health care to attend – a member of Congress would be great, but even state or local representatives, local university presidents, hospital chiefs, etc.
* Organize local residents who are uninsured or have been screwed by the system. The more the merrier. Make them available to the press to tell their stories.
* Hold a pre-screening press conference. Explain why you’re having the screening. Have the local residents recount their experiences with the U.S. health care system, and/or have the politician speak.
* Encourage attendees to assemble early and to bring home-made signs or posters to the screening.
Getting the Word Out:
* Write a press release announcing your event. Make it short and sweet. Be sure to include the Five W's: who, what, where, when, and why. Feel free to use the 'SiCKO' logo. If you expect a large crowd, include that in your press release as well.
* Prepare a press kit to accompany your press release. It should include:
- The 'SiCKO' fact sheet (PDF)
- A sheet of press quotes about the movie from national media outlets
- A fact-sheet of your own including the number of uninsured in your county or state (info available through U.S. Census)
- Written testimony from your local uninsured, local politicians, and/or your organization
- If you plan on having a speaker at your sponsored screening event, provide the written statement that they will be delivering, in advance
* Send the press release and kit to your local newspapers, T.V. and radio stations a week or two before the event (locate your local media outlets here). Follow up with your media outlets and confirm they received the materials.
* The day of the event, call each outlet early in the morning. That's when they'll be setting their coverage schedule for the day. Politely ask if they'll be attending your screening of Michael Moore's 'SiCKO.' Let them know your name and contact info.
* When the press arrives at the event, make sure one person on your team greets each reporter and remains available for their requests.
