Environmental Defense: Delivering Environmental Declaration To Congress On July 4th
Edited on Wed Jun-27-07 03:35 PM by RestoreGore
Dear Jan,

You and more than 50,000 of your fellow citizens signed the New Patriotism Declaration – and we're making sure Congress knows it.

Tomorrow, we will run a full-page ad in Roll Call, a newspaper widely regarded as the most-read source of Congressional news and information in Washington.

We thought this was an effective way to deliver a clear call to action, not only to Members of Congress and Senators, but to their staffs and political handlers as well.

View the ad highlighting our Declaration of New Patriotism.

Congress has not yet taken meaningful action to fight global warming. But, there are growing signs of progress.

Just today, Senators Joe Lieberman (D-CT) and John Warner (R-VA), the Chairman and Ranking Member of a key environmental Senate subcommittee, announced that they have begun drafting a "comprehensive bill to address global climate change."

And, on the other side of Capitol Hill, Rep. John Dingell, Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said today his panel would attempt to write a global warming bill this year that would cut global warming pollution by "between 60, and perhaps as much as 80, percent by 2050."

The science tells us that we must cut global warming pollution by 80 percent by 2050 to prevent the worst consequences of global warming. Rep. Dingell's announcement is an encouraging sign that he is taking this issue seriously and that we could see Congressional action later this year.

This momentum couldn't have come at a better time, but we need to keep the pressure on until we see real action. Nothing short of overwhelming public pressure can turn the tide, and we are so grateful for your help in keeping the heat on Capitol Hill.

Thanks again for all that you do.

Sincerely,

The Environmental Defense Action Fund

1. Don't you think the Founding Fathers cared about the environment?
Seems they cared about many things that so many take for granted today.
