Those Americans - citizens of the US, actually - who are clamoring for a harsh end to the illegal immigrant situation, and laws to deal with the "criminals" who violate our borders in the future, are going to get what they want and more. Oh, yes.

You see, a major growth "industry" in the field of incarceration (itself a booming business) is the current and upcoming immigrant detention system. Of course, companies like Dick Cheney's Halliburton and its off-shore subdivisions, are already deeply involved in the construction of new prisons and the refurbishing of old detention centers scattered across the country, some dating to World War II and their long-ago use in holding German, Italian and Japanese POWs.

Currently, in an average year, the US detains some quarter-million immigrants. (You didn't know?) Plans are in the works, however, to add facilities for tens of thousands more beds for the anticipated detainees about to flood the current immigrant incarceration system. Can you see the potential dollars to be made in such a growth industry? Millions annually. Billions, probably. Do you smell the greed already wafting along on the warm summer breezes here in the land of unrestrained corporatism?

Also, it is reported that more than sixty immigrants have died in the past three years while being held in detention centers, their deaths caused by the denial of needed medicine or emergency treatment or both.
Screw 'em, right? They're foreigners, illegals, law-breakers. If they get sick and die while in a US detention center, well, whose fault is that? Isn't that the gist of the faux Republican and Ugly Conservative point-of-view?

And speaking of Republicans, Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina has added an amendment to the immigrant bill now making its way through our hallowed law-making process that would impose mandatory detention of all people who overstay their visas. Can you see what Lindsey doesn't? (Or does he?) The centers will fill with kids, old people, pregnant women, those seeking political asylum - people who arrived legally but who, for whatever reason, allowed their visas to expire. We are embracing fascism so much faster than one could have guessed seven years ago when this Bush madness all began. It is astonishing, breathtaking, stupefying.

All this was described in detail yesterday by New York Times writer Nina Bernstein. Truly, we are seeing the beginning of the establishment of hundreds of Guantanamos across the US, from sea to shining sea, deep within the amber waves of grain, in the shadows of the purple mountain majesties.
