I guess maybe I'm wrong about this Coulter-Elizabeth Edwards
confrontation on Hardball yesterday.

I respectfully suggested that Elizabeth (who I love to death) was unfortunately giving Coulter material for a chapter in her next book by politely appealing for Coulter stop the personal attacks.

Everyone knows Coulter won't stop being an asshole, per her nasty, sarcastic reaction to the plea.

My feeling when it comes to dealing with bullies is you either have to hit back hard with some nastiness of your own (which of course Elizabeth is too classy to do), or ignore them. (I'm convinced Coulter would be a nobody if more people just ignored her).

I just felt, well.....now Coulter the bully knows first hand that she successfully angered/got under the skin of the Edwards with her nasty and vicious comments, and will probably now escalate her assault with a new round of insults.

Can you say entire chapter of her next book?

Never the less, apparently Elizabeth's respectful plea is helping to raise additional cash for John's campaign.

If this is the case, then excellent!

Fine, maybe I was mostly wrong for suggesting Elizabeth should not dignify Coulter's ugliness with a response.

Having said this, I feel it was really unfair for some DUers to recklessly accuse me of being anti-Edwards for president by mistaking honest constructive criticism for an attack on the Edwards campaign. x{

That is ridiculous.

1. Coulter should just be ignored
She is a like a parasite, she thrives on any attention.

5. yep
When we challenge her idiotic statements, it's like feeding the monster. If you stop feeding the monster, it goes away.

7. She won't go away
Her brand of assholic idiocy is candy to the pricks that thrive on it. I'm of course talking about nutjob repukes that read her plageristic drivel and listen to the likes of oxyrush, glenn, really I'm not in the closet, beck and savage weiner.

I don't think any amount of promotion will increase the sales of her tomes of shit either because the barely literate who buy them will already be counting the pennies to pick up a copy, those who know better and still want it will simply wait two or three weeks for them to hit the discard bin for $1.00.

15. Plus of course it's not just nutjob repukes who are choosing to promote her
Nobody on the right is challenging - she is the face of modern republicanism/conservativism, and if conservatives don't like that, let them reject her.

2. They used to say...
that Kerry should'nt dignify the Swift-boaters with a response.
He responded with too little , wayyy too late. Cost him the election.

8. Right. Well, Elizabeth's plea is not going to get Coulter to stop
her attacks.....it'll at the most help raise money for her husband.

I'm not sure you can compare the two situations, although I understand what you're getting at.

It wouldn't have worked for Kerry to be nice and respectful like Elizabeth....even if he did finally say something.

He needed to come out and use words like "liars" and "despicable," etc., to let them know he wasn't going to stand for their filth.

It also would have sent a message for other groups not to challenge him with lies.

3. We need to hit back and hit back hard
The right has to know they can't get away with this. Ignoring this is not the answer, in my opinion.

If they know that they would be made a fool of and get exposed if they spew this garbage they may stop.

6. I believe that the Edwards learned their lesson from 2004
They watched (and many in the campaign have come out and said that JE wasn't allowed to respond) as Kerry got his ass handed to him by the swift boaters and stood there and did nothing about it. Instead of making Kerry seem like he was above all this petty nonsense, it made him (and all Democrats to an extent) look weak, like they aren't capable of fighting back.

I think John and Elizabeth have taken that lesson and are using it wisely now. If they say something about you, immediately get in their faces and challenge them on it. You saw what happened when Elizabeth challenged Ann - the poor wittle baby immediately went into snark mode because she had nothing else to go with.

The only candidate I will support this go around is one who will fight back.

9. It's not anti-Edward's speak to me, but rather, pro-Rove speak, unwittingly of course
To ignore the bile is to allow it to continue.

Case in point: The Swift-boating of Kerry.

It is not dancing to another's tune if you change the band after your sack the other one.

Fight back each lie loud and hard. Call them on their evil loud and long.

10. What I don't get is the double standard
According to the Cons (you cboy4 but the guests that turn up on MSM), Coultergeist should get a pass...she's outrageous and over the top...she's self-absorbed and out there completely by herself...she's not 'mainstream' Republican...blah blah blah.

According to the Cons...John Kerry flubs a "joke" and well, you know the story.
According to the Cons...Dick Durbin reads word for word a description of Abu Ghraib that includes "gulags" and well, you know the story.
According to the Cons...The Dixie Chicks lead singer makes remarks at one of their concerts in another country and well, you know the story.
According to the Cons...Harry Reid makes a comment about JCS Peter Pace' incompetent management and well, you know the story.

I believe Elizabeth Edwards had every right to defend her family.

11. Coulter doesn't require any impetus to secrete new bile . . .
Edited on Thu Jun-28-07 09:35 AM by MrModerate
It just oozes out of her. She can spin this incident into a chapter or anything else she chooses into a chapter for her upcoming bestseller (bulk purchases only, please) "Democrats Steal Dog Turds and Eat Them."

The plusses from this exchange include 1) Edwards comes off as classy while Coulter reinforces her image as a shrieking harridan; 2) Civilized independents and right-of-center voters shake their heads in disgust and become less willing to vote for 'the party of Coulter and Hannity'; 3) The meme of "political discourse is degraded by rightwing banshees" gets another airing; 4) The Edwards campaign gets an opportunity to energize its base and attract a little cash.

The minuses include 1) Coulter gets another publicity jolt, arresting her slide into sullen irrelevance; 2) Wingnuts get another tidbit of red meat to energize *their* base; 3) Profoundly fatuous Chris Matthews gets a bounce because he's successfully stage-managed a "catfight."

13. I wonder what Coulter would do if everyone started wishing nasty things happened to her?
What if someone she insults says in response, "Well, I can only hope that Ann gets hit by a car in the street outside of the studio, and dies."

Or, "It's too bad Ann hasn't been shot in the face yet."

Throw her nasty remarks right back at her. She would hardly be in a position to complain. Just wish the same thing on her that she wishes on them.

I really can't think of words to properly describe Coulter. The ones I know of are apparently offensive to some here at DU, so I won't write them now. Suffice it to say evil does not even scrape the surface of describing Coulter.

18. Yea, well even though some people believe she's crafty in the
way she baits people to sell books, there are others like myself who believe she "suffers" severe anti social personality disorder. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antisocial_personality_disorder

She no different than those lunatics from Kansas who picket the funerals of gay people and U.S. soldiers.

They should all be ignored, IMO.

14. I'm estactic Elizabeth Edwards
Edited on Thu Jun-28-07 09:46 AM by zidzi
called in and called skankster out. And I hadn't even thought about the extra money people would send in just to protest what's her name's vile pinhead.

Elizabeth Edwards is on record asking that the level of political discourse be raised not lowered. Another reminder of the strength and spirit of Elizabeth Edwards who is clearly a winner. It also brings attention to the corporatewhoredom of chris "my balls aren't so hard" matthews. He blew it dragging in filth outta the sewer.

The money the Edwards campaign got was a perk.

16. A little more directness might have been better
as in "Please stop calling for my husband's assassination."

Can you imagine the Skank's face as she sputtered and spluttered about her JOKE?

It would have been utterly priceless, a viral video that would have ended her career.

20. It might have been better if she told her she was a psychopath
and wouldn't be surprised if she turned on CNN one day to learn Coulter had assassinated a Democrat because she's a nut

The Dems need me as their verbal attack machine, I'm telling you. ;)
