WH ignores subpoenas -- what's Congress's next move?
Assume for the sake of discussion that Congress has a spine . . .

3. Contempt first, and then censure
if they can get the latter. They're going to have to convince a lot of Koolaid swilling Republics that this is an attack on THEIR power, too, to get King Stupid and/or his Regent censured.

2. if they had a spine
they would not have taken impeachment off the table

their next move will be to call the WHAAAAAAAAAmbulance

followed by writing angry letters to the White House

Speeches on the floor

more subpoenas

and then they will tell us they don't have the votes to do anything more

4. I think you're underestimating our committee chairs
They're as serious as a Dick Cheney heart attack.

It's not our fault the Justice Department has been stacked with cronies and rendered useless.

7. I'm sure they are serious
but I'm burnt out from hearing one outrage after another, one scandal after another and nothing happens except one excuse after another

I'm telling you now, if the Dems don't get their act together and hold the bushies accountable - the '08 elections is going to be a wave of throw the bums out - all the bums. It's going to make '92 look like a nursery school tea party

6. Impeach Bush and Cheney. Anything else is sham
Edited on Thu Jun-28-07 11:35 AM by pat_k
Unless the so-called Democratic "leadership" wants to continue betraying their oath to "support and defend" (which, BTW, means "fight," win or lose), continue giving cover to Bush and Cheney for war crimes, continue confirming the perception the Democrats are hypocritical wimps, continue sounding like idiots (accusing Bush and Cheney of grave crimes then declaring "but worry not, we won't actually DO anything capable of stopping them!), continue their nose dive in the polls, . . .

. . .they must impeach Bush and Cheney NOW for turning Americans into torturers, abrogating unto themselves unconstitutional and Un-American power to violate the law "to protect us," re-writing and exempting the executive from law at whim.

Of course Bush and Cheney are chuckling "Gee, for a minute there we thought they might actually DO something" and tossing Congressional subpoenas into the garbage. What else could any sane person possibly expect from men who have proven over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over that they have absolutely no intention of stopping their violations of the dictates of our Constitution and law as they steamroll Congress to advance fascism in America?

8. Doesn't the Congress then take it to the Courts for a ruling on enforcement?
Edited on Thu Jun-28-07 11:38 AM by 1monster
If I recall correctly, Nixon didn't comply with subpeonas until forced to by the Courts.

If they do go to the Courts, get a ruling in their favor, and Bush still refuses to hand over the material, then the House has two slam dunk issues for impeachment: Obstruction of Justice and Contempt of Congress.

9. Impeachment, unless they want to lose in the courts
so I guess we lose again and continue to live in a fascist country.

10. I suspect that the WH is going to force congress into the courts.
I believe that they feel they have the courts stacked to their advantage and they will win each case. But hey, thats just me. Now back to scrubbing floors.

11. The first step is to impeach Gonzalez.
His function now is only to protect the Bush Administration from the law. If you can get rid of Gonzalez, it won't be long before there's such a popular demand for impeachment that the whole Supreme Court issue will be irrelevant. Pursuing this thing in the courts is only going to end in a 5-4 Supreme Court decision in favor of power.
