1. Wikipedia sez:
(emphasis mine)

Onex Corporation (TSX: OCX) is a Toronto based investment firm. It was founded in 1983 by Gerry Schwartz. Today it is a public traded company but Schwartz has 67.6% of the voting control and continues to serve as Chairman and CEO. Its head office is on the 49th floor of BCE Place in Toronto, with a branch office in New York City.

Counting all its assets, Onex is the largest employer in Canada, with 138,000 employees. Although the firm has majority control over most of its subsidiaries, rarely does it have whole ownership.

It has been speculated that the firm specializes in buying firms in Canada and the United States that are undervalued or in need of restructuring, then later selling them at a profit. These restructuring efforts often involve cutting wages and workforces and outsourcing work to lower wage countries abroad.

The firm is involved is a wide array of industries. Among its specialties is buying the high cost manufacturing arms of companies and turning them into low cost suppliers.

They were involved in an attempt to buy and merge Air Canada and Canadian Airlines (now defunct) a few years ago--didn't happen, ultimately. Basically, they're barracudas and everyone knows it.

3. It certainly is a company that prefers, for the most part, to
stay under the radar, here is some info:

The investment firm has interests in several industries, including electronics manufacturing (Celestica), entertainment (Cineplex), auto parts (J.L. French), and health care (AMR, EmCare, Res-Care, and Skilled Healthcare Group, which it bought in late 2005). Looking to beef up its aerospace investments, the company teamed with Goldman Sachs in 2006 to buy Raytheon Aircraft for more than $3 billion.

and this:

ONEX CORPORATION is a diversified global company that operates through autonomous subsidiaries in electronics manufacturing services, customer support services, healthcare, real estate, communications infrastructure, theatre exhibition, aerostructures manufacturing aircraft and aftermarket, and personal care products.
