I want to thank all those Democratic Senators who
Edited on Thu Jun-28-07 06:51 PM by Skidmore
refused to fillabuster Alito and Robert because those two men were nice guys, and the good senators didn't want to appear less than bipartisan. Thank you, thank you, thank you. We all begged for a fastrack to the 19th century. We couldn't have done it without you. We owe you such a debt of gratitude for your service to the people.

I can think of a few other things we need to thank you for in the same manner, but right now I'm so overwrought with gratitude that I can't even put into words my feelings about those accomplishements of yours.

10. Not once. But twice.
They let Roberts on because Bush would appoint someone like Alito.
They let Alito on because Bush would appoint someone like Atila the Hun.

5. actually you should thank those voters in 2000 who said it didn't matter who won
those that decided to sit home, which would have prevented it from letting the supreme court decide the election

women, men, young people, minorities, all we have to do is look in the mirror if we want someone to blame

Of course we will all have to pay for it

Gore Vidal is talking about the Supremes right now on AAR.
He's being interviewed by David Bender on Rachel Maddow's show. They are taking calls, and someone just asked if Roberts and Alito could be impeached for lying in their confirmation hearings. Vidal said they COULD be; however, that's different from it actually happening. Still, it was good to hear. People talk about the Supremes as if they are immovable gods. As if they can do anything they want, and get away with it. This is supposed to be the highest court in the land. Yeah, I'm a silly optimist, but again, it's good to hear that they could be removed.

And trust me, Americans will LOVE living in a fascist country. They won't have to waste any spare time doing all that 'thinking' and stuff like that.

Yeah - those smart Dems who were dicouraging the filibuster behind the scenes sure know a lot more than those dumbasses who risked their political careers to stand against it.

Yeah - Schumer and Hillary knew where the future is heading and they are the ones looking out for us.

January 28th, 2006 5:44 am

By Glenn Thrush / Newsday

WASHINGTON - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton on Friday announced she'll join potential 2008 presidential rival John Kerry in voting to filibuster against Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito, just as top Democratic leaders predicted the effort is likely doomed.

With three Democratic senators pledging support for Alito, the New Jersey conservative seems virtually assured of being confirmed by the full Senate Monday or Tuesday, party leaders predicted Friday. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) told reporters in Washington that "everyone knows" Senate Democrats couldn't muster the 40 votes needed to support a last-ditch filibuster.

"History will show that Judge Alito's nomination is the tipping point against constitutionally-based freedoms and protections we cherish as individuals and as a nation," Clinton wrote in a statement during a fundraising stop in Seattle.

Several senators had urged their colleagues to filibuster this week, but Clinton wasn't among them, Capitol Hill aides said.

Her move seems to put her at odds with New York's senior senator, Charles Schumer, who spent last week privately arguing that a filibuster would damage Democrats' chances of taking back the Senate this year, according to party sources.

Analysts said Clinton had little choice but to back the filibuster, given Kerry's Thursday announcement that he was reviving the stop-Alito movement. For all the talk of Clinton's shift to the center on abortion, she can ill-afford to let a possible adversary outflank her on the left among liberals who favor abortion rights, according to Jennifer Duffy, who monitors the Senate for the nonpartisan Cook Political Report.

"It's an empty gesture," Duffy said of Clinton's announcement. "What Democratic primary voter is going to vote for her if she didn't do everything to oppose Alito? ... She had to join John Kerry."

In addition to Kerry and Reid, Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said they too would vote no on closing debate, even as they conceded their efforts would likely come up short.

Liberal and abortion rights groups have been bombarding senators' offices, infuriated that Democrats haven't done more to block Alito's confirmation.

Several other Democrats, including Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) and Kent Conrad (D- N.D.), agree with Schumer that a filibuster could alienate middle-of-the-road Democrats in this year's midterm elections.

8. It's spelled "filibuster", and the Democrats didn't have enough votes to maintain it.
If you recall (I hope), John Kerry tried to filibuster Alito's nomination, but it failed. Even if he had the support of the seven Democrats who you're referring to ("all those Democrats"), there still wouldn't have been enough support to maintain the filibuster.

25. That. of course, is nonsense.
At no time did the Republicans have a filibuster-
proof majority in the senate.

We had wimps who caved, who defected to the Republican cause.

they didn't want to make them cry like Ricky Santorum's little one did, and Alito's wifey did "you don't like my daddy", "you're mean to my hubby"...

13. I knew these guys were a bad deal just by looking at their
wives in the confirmation hearings. Mrs. Alito had that matriarchal look and Mrs. Roberts has to be a stepford wife....again this is just mho.

12. Just read this to my hubby and he loved it as do I...it's absolutely
the truth. Have you noticed we "don't have the votes" when we're in the minority and we "don't have the votes" when we're in the majority? The only answer now, since our country has been destroyed on so many fronts, is revolution and I don't know if I have the strength.....but by God I'll find it somewhere....maybe where the votes are. imho BTW K&R

14. This goes back much further than the confirmation of these two ......
..... if the 2000 race had been carried out in line with the will of the people, President Gore would never have nominated these two or anyone like them.

Quite simply, with respect to these two being nominated by a Monkey, it never had to get that far.

22. Some Democrats don't like getting walked all over.
unfortunately, few of them are in elected office.

If we support their lay-down approach, what would that make us? appeaser appeasers?

look, there is a lot of anger towards Senate dems these days, and it's really because we view them as our last line of defense within the government. they may not have the power to pass universal healthcare, or nix NCLB, but they can damn well put a stop to the shit the GOP-ers have pulled over the past 8+ years. They can and they don't, and they're pretty much all we have.

27. I abhor all the bashing that has been going on here.
but I agree that the Democrats really dropped the ball on these two. This is going to be major trouble for our country. As critical as the last two elections have been, this next one is really vital, or we can kiss individual liberty goodbye. It's already teetering on the brink.
