Poll question: If you hear gunshots in your neighborhood.
Do you call the police or do you mind your own business?

1. Since I live WAY out in the country AND my nearest neighbor
has a pistol range in his back of his barn, gunshots are a common occurrence in my neighborhood.

3. Yelling, screaming, banging heads, etc.
That has caused me to pick up the phone. Fortunately don't have that in this neighborhood. We just have some yahoos that think its a fine thing to shoot their weapons on the 4th of July and New Years.

4. It depends
on how close the shots are. I live in Stockton CA and hear gunshots every single night. I close my blinds at night and keep a low profile. Used to be a nice little neighborhood. Not anymore.

6. Depends on where I live, but probably not.
Lots of gunfire all the time, I wouldn't think to call. No gunfire ever, I'd probably just assume someone else called. It's not good to talk to the cops even if you've done nothing wrong. If they decide they don't like you they can fuck up your life.

12. I'd call the police! Gun shots in my neighborhood would be VERY
UNUSUAL! The houses are on 1/2 acre lots, but close enough that nobody could safely have a firing range in his yard, or even safely shoot a weapon in their yard, unless for some stupid reason they were shooting at the gound. I like it like it is, and if some idiot decides to start shooting, I'm going to do everything I can to stop that kind of activity ASAP!

I have nothing against guns and shooting. We go about 45 minutes north fo here to a shooting range and have a lot of fun, but IMO guns fall into the "there's a time & a place" catagory!

13. I check the calendar.
If it's one of the "shooting holidays" I just stay indoor with several walls between me and the outside of the house. If not, I'd probably ring the police.

Here in Santa Fe, we have "shooting holidays" and "walking holidays." The walking holidays involve processions and Masses, the shooting holidays involve parties and noise.

bemusedly,
Bright

23. Not gunshots maybe
But its hard for me to tell the difference between a single shotgun blast and the occasional M80 going off somewhere in the area. (San Jose,CA)

God I hate recreational explosives

I always half expect to hear screaming afterwords.

Calling the police doesn't elicit much response.

30. Call the police. The house behind the one across the street was shot
up a couple of years ago. Thank god the residents weren't home, but whoever did it shot out all the windows in the front of this two-story home. A bit too close for comfort for me.

my husband and I were both pretty sure it was gunshots and not fireworks. the police just took our info and that was all. we have never heard anything about it since. I even googled the area just in case there was something. nothing.

but I still think we did the right thing.

Call the security patrol. We don't get city police here, and the county sheriff's response time is pretty long. The neighborhood has long had a private security patrol.

40. We had 2 drivebys in our former neighborhood
First time we didn't realize it til the day after..we thought it was kids playing w/ leftover firecrackers. Next day we were told it was a driveby.
The second time we knew it was happening. They must have come back by w/ bigger guns cuz it was not pop, pop, pop..it was boom boom boom. We called 911 (from the living room floor). Twice they asked was "did you see the car make/model?"...Um, NO, we were too busy avoiding windows, never mind going out to see what the car looked like!
Next day we heard that one of the bullets went thru our neighbors window, hit a lamp shade and then was found embedded in her closet wall.

I have confronted hunters on my land in the past. The usual excuse is they didn't see the signs. Of course they had to have noticed the barbed wire fence when they hopped it. I have always considered it a good idea to go armed when asking armed trespassers to leave. I bring along the m1a because it is an equal to any hunting rifle but has a larger ammunition capacity.

but the fact that I live across a wide creek from "The Farm" I'd be calling the cops all the time. The CIA is firing off too often.

However, if I thought the shots were VERY near, of course I'd call the cops.

The "Farm" I was referring too is the CIA camp where Valerie Plame trained.

44. We had something weird here last year..
Starting around mid-June, I'd hear loud bangs about a block over thattaway every night starting around a certain time, going for a couple minutes, and stopping. They were definitely fireworks - I'd see the things going up at times, I know what they sound like, etc. Every night for six or seven weeks or so, a few'd go off, and it got to the point where nobody really cared anymore and used it as a clock as much as anything else. ("Oh, it must be ten or so.")

Then one day, I hear a bunch of different-sounding bangs. I know what handguns sound like, and can tell them from typical fireworks easily enough. That was definitely the latter, several shots.

A few other people could tell the difference, too - it was an ugly neighborhood, stereotypically gangbangerish by local standards but probably child's play compared to most major cities, where there were shots fired now and then (although almost never obviously at, much less into, someone - nobody's been shot there in ten or fifteen years despite the gunplay), so I wasn't the only one who could spot it and, of course, the cops were called that time.

It makes me wonder, though, if some guys didn't have the idea of lighting off fireworks regularly for an extended period, so that people wouldn't notice a "slightly" different set of loud bangs one night.

I definitely pay more attention to people lighting off fireworks now, though.

from and suspect they're coming from within the village I'd call. Otherwise, it's just farmers, their kids or hunters shooting guns.
