Masilotti wants to set his own date for surrender
By TOM DUBOCQ

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

Friday, June 29, 2007

WEST PALM BEACH — Tony Masilotti fears he will be whisked away to prison today, leaving his 12-year-old daughter home alone, according to an attorney for the former Palm Beach County Commissioner.

Federal prosecutors, while pushing for Masilotti to serve the maximum five years for a public corruption conviction, also want him locked up immediately after his 9:30 a.m. sentencing hearing, defense attorney Jack O'Donnell said Thursday.

Also not planning to attend: the Rev. Leo Armbrust, the Masilotti family's longtime priest. Armbrust said he wasn't invited and hasn't seen Masilotti since he officiated at his oldest daughter's wedding last year.

"I did call him when he first appeared in court. I wanted to let him know I still was his friend," Armbrust said. "It's been a very difficult time for him. We all make mistakes. Then we find out who our friends are when we are down and out."
