Is The Simpsons still subversive?
Is The Simpsons still subversive?

"I will not instigate revolution." That's what Bart has to write out repeatedly in an early episode of The Simpsons, which traditionally begins with him chalking up punishment lines on the class blackboard.

It went along with the notion that The Simpsons was a subversive show which annoyed teachers, parents and the establishment.

But is Bart still a rebel, or nowadays would he write instead "I must not uphold family values"?

1. Its a very very tired show with a new guest start each week.
The show lost all its gas in the late 90s.

2. I've noticed that episodes that have a "hip hop" theme are preachy.
I prefer my Simpson's without the proselytizing. They have really lost their edge. There is something to be said for bowing out gracefully.

3. They've been on the air many many years
And still hit more often than they miss; they make me laugh and at the end of the day, what else do I care about?

7. It's only subversive if you consider being a democrat subversive.

I think it's kinda left-of (the US's) center (IE centrist in the rest of the world).

Not really subversive at all to me. I don't think it ever really was.

Life in Hell was kinda subversive. The Simpsons was just irreverent - there is a bit of a difference.
