Please remember how hard Senator Kerry worked to stop Alito
Edited on Fri Jun-29-07 12:01 PM by FLDem5
(on edit: sorry for shouting - I have just been re-living the emotions of that failed filibuster lately.)

He was MOCKED by Republicans and DEMOCRATS alike for trying to stop the bullshit that is happening now.

The Democrats broke my heart that day - there is no other way to phrase it. John Kerry's name was dragged through the mud for trying to mount a filibuster.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/1/26/192843/363

Here's the bottom line though and I'll just be blunt and direct about it. It takes more than one or two people to filibuster. It's not "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington." I'm doing what I can, Senator Kennedy is doing what he can, but if, like me, you want to stop Judge Alito from becoming Justice Alito, we can't just preach to our own choir. We need even more of your advocacy.

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/27/politics/politicsspecial1/27alito.html?ex=1183262400&en=8841efee67cea619&ei=5070

But late Thursday afternoon, Mr. Kerry began calling fellow Democratic senators in a quixotic, last-minute effort for a filibuster to stop the nomination.

Democrats cringed and Republicans jeered at the awkwardness of his gesture, which almost no one in the Senate expects to succeed.

"God bless John Kerry," said Don Stewart, a spokesman for Senator John Cornyn, a Texas Republican on the Judiciary Committee. "He just cinched this whole nomination. With Senator Kerry, it is Christmas every day."

<snip>
Senator Harry Reid, the Democratic leader, sounded almost apologetic about Mr. Kerry's statements.

<snip>
And on Friday, Senator Joseph Biden, a Delaware Democrat and member of the Judiciary Committee who voted against Mr. Alito there, said he would not support a filibuster and doubted one would happen.

http://wonkette.com/politics/john-f-kerry/john-kerrys-last-stand-the-alito-filibuster-backstory-151434.php
Last week, when Senator John F. Kerry issued a vocal call for a filibuster of Supreme Court nominee Samuel A. Alito, Jr. — going so far as to blog about it — many Democrats and Republicans had the same reaction: “What the hell is he thinking?” The fact that Senator Kerry issued this clarion call to arms from Switzerland, of all places, didn’t exactly help. As White House press secretary Scott McClellan put it, “Even for a senator, it takes some pretty serious yodeling to call for a filibuster from a five-star ski resort in the Swiss Alps.”

They can all go to hell. Look what they have done.

THANK YOU JOHN KERRY!

But, yes, it was sickening how Kerry was treated over that. It's how they treat any Senator who's courageous enough to step off the reservation.

Remember Boxer's challenge to the 2004 election? Of course, that was Kerry's turn to be a cowardly weenie. It's like a weenie tag-team over there.

2. I think Massachusetts should secede from the union, now that
we've gotten rid of Gov RobMe. And we can build a dome around the state to keep U.S. pollution out.

15. The Dem caucus was ANGRY because they didn't want this battle and became
even more furious with Kerry when many of us told them we wouldn't send them money anymore - not after Downing Street Memos got 10 senate signers, Alito filibuster was undermined by key Dem leaders, and Kerry-Feingold Iraq withdrawal had 13 Dem votes with some Dems coming to the floor of the senate to speak AGAINST withdrawal and any timetable - Lieberman and Hillary.

Schumer and Associates can go suck hot air.

Except for the cheating of Rove and company our world would not be in this despicable dilemma. If there were justice in the world, Rove and the whole sorry bunch would be tarred and feathered. Where is Henry the 8th when you need him?

16. Amen!! And if we had FAIR ELECTIONS none of this would have ever happened
Senator Kerry is one of my favorites. And I'm glad this thread is calling attention to how HARD he tried to work for us, against OUTRAGEOUS odds.

"I told you so" doesn't help avoid the HORRIBLE damage this SCOTUS will do to the United States.

Kerry was right.

18. Wonderful post! Don't forget the NY Times also attacked him after the call to filibuster.
Even though they had run an editorial a couple of days earlier saying someone should attempt to stop Alito. The someone they wanted to do this apparently wasn't Senator Kerry.
They should now make sure that they include his name as the one leader who stood up and challenged this nomination.

Constantly rehashing the past isn't going to get us anywhere. And taking pot shots at the one that is trying to end it doesn't help either.

32. He's the Energizer Senator
He just keeps going and going. I don't think most people at DU realize that he has been essential in all the progress we've made since 2004. Granted, I wish it had been much much more - but John Kerry has been on the front side of EVERY battle we face - from the war to health care to alternative energy to small business to veterans benefits, and yes finally, to the environment and climate change. He really should be the President. The fact that the Democrats and left doesn't get that has left me with no faith in people's so-called political principles at all. He's everything people say they want.
