New CNN Poll: 57% believe Dem Congress good for country, and GOP still unpopular

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2007/06/29/poll-support-for-dems-in-congress-wavering-gop-still-in-disfavor/

Read it, because you will probably only read/hear it on CNN-- maybe. The MSM doesn't like to report good news for Dems, as we know.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — The Democratic leadership in Congress has lost some support among Americans — but not so much that the public wants Republicans back in charge, according to results of a new CNN/Opinion Research Poll released Friday.

Nearly half of 515 poll respondents, or 49 percent, said they disapproved of what Democratic leaders in Congress have done since taking over in January. Forty-two percent said they approve. In May, 49 percent of poll respondents approved and 44 percent did not.

However, 57 percent said they believe Democratic control of Congress is good for the country, as opposed to 31 percent who said it is not. In November, the same month midterm elections were held and Democrats assumed control, 67 percent of poll respondents said Democratic control of Congress is good for the nation.

The sampling error for those questions is plus or minus 4.5 percent, as they were asked of a half sample out of 1,029 poll respondents.

1. that's a lot different than they've been claiming
something like 30 points different!

And that makes sense, too!

That poll with the Congress lower than Chimpy--who could even believe that?

The American Public is smarter than that.

6. The question is a little different: It asks if Democratic control of congress
is a good thing; that's what 57% said "yes" to. It's when people are asked if they approve of the job congress is doing that the positive answer goes down by some 30% (or so).

8. I've thought before that the polls should ask separate questions about the parties.
I'd probably answer that I don't approve of Congress' performance, in general, but I would certainly prefer a Democratically-controlled Congress!

2. When the obvious alternative is republicans in charge of congress
I can't imagine really patriotic, educated, caring, constitution loving Americans not thinking the dems in charge are good for the country. The trash proved to us what happens when they "win" elections.

4. That's higher than I expected..
But it totally blows the "Congress is unpopular" GOP meme out of the water. Notice how they (The MSM) never say "The REPUBLICAN Congress is unpopular", it's always generalized.

Especially coming from CNN. Maybe its a reward from CNN to Congressional Dems for selling out and adopting the Bush agenda.

Seems statistically impossible.

10. Statistically consistent. The numbers are there
The problem has been in the perceptual spin.

15. The 57% number isn't based on the same proposition
So statistical consistency is beside the point.

20. 45% Reps plus 20% malcontents
from the left and the libertarians; equals the 35% approval numbers that we've been seeing. When the question is broken down to whether people are saying they prefer Republicans, the result is a resounding no.

Now, if we would just stay focused on the obstruction going on with the Repubicans, maybe we could kill that goddamn worthless pile of shit party once and for all.

9. Many regard opposition control of Congress is 'good' irrespective of party.
Thus, it would be an error in reasoning to equate the opinion that Democratic control of Congress with a Republican president is 'good' with the inferred opinion that Democrats are inherently 'better.' Many (a majority?) of those same people would regard Republican control of Congress during the Clinton/Gore (or any Democratic) adminstration 'good' as well.

11. 49% don't approve of what Dem leaders are doing.
Only 42% do. That's pretty sad. The fact that 57% want a Democratic Congress means that there's a lot of people who don't want Republicans in charge but they're sick of how Democrats are running things too.

13. not necessarily...
geez...a little good news for a change, and we have to pick it apart to further denigrate the party? I think 57% of the American people preferring that Dems control Congress is great news (at least to me).

16. Yes, necesarily.
there's no "necessarily" about it. More people are unhappy with the job Democratic leaders are doing. It means that people have an expectation about what they want Democrats to do that isn't being met. Like, ending the war in Iraq, for example.

19. Not trying to pick a fight here, but.....
I was just trying to point out that we as Democrats are never going to agree on anything. I guess that's what makes us Democrats. I do, however, sometimes get so bored with the defeatist posts/posters who never see the silver lining. I maintain that the poll sounds like good news for us, because before this poll, there was another poll that had Congress' ratings below the pResident's.

It's just good to see Dems numbers separated from the Repubs in Congress. :hi:

21. See #20
If the radical activists would spend as much time exposing Republicans as they do whining about Dems, those numbers would be different. It's the same problem Kerry had in 2004 and Dems have had since stupid fucking Nader.
