Vice President Cheney's Role in Illegal Water Diversion Prompts Congressional Investigation
Here is the press release from my rep's office sent to me this morning.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
June 27, 2007

Vice President Cheney's Role in Illegal Water Diversion Prompts Congressional Investigation

WASHINGTON - Today, Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA), along with 36 California and Oregon Members of Congress, called for congressional hearings on Vice President Dick Cheney's involvement in the political decision that killed 80,000 spawning salmon. They made this request to House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Nick Rahall (D-WV) after a Washington Post investigative report found that Cheney pressured mid-level bureaucrats in the Department of Interior to divert water from the Klamath River Basin for political gain.

"We've known since 2002 that the Bush Administration manipulated science in a perverse and petty attempt to win votes," said Thompson. "Now it appears that this manipulation goes straight to the top. Despite what he may think, Vice President Cheney is not above the law and not above Congress' oversight. We want a thorough investigation of his involvement in the largest salmon kill and fishing disaster in our nation's history."

In 2002, the Interior Department diverted water from the Klamath River Basin to farmers in Oregon, resulting in the death of 80,000 adult salmon. The Washington Post reports that Vice President Cheney called for the damaging water policy to secure the farmer's votes, despite scientific evidence that it would endanger two federal protected species of fish, a violation of the Endangered Species Act.

Thompson and others brought a lawsuit against the Administration in 2002, and three courts found that the water diversion was "arbitrary and capricious and in violation of the Endangered Species Act."

In the letter to Chairman Rahall, the Members wrote, "The ramifications of that salmon kill are still being felt today as returns to the Klamath River are so low that commercial, sport and tribal fishing seasons have been curtailed for the past three years. In fact, last year's commercial fishing season for all of California and Oregon was cut by over 90 percent, and was the largest commercial fishing closure in the history of the country, causing over $60 million in damages to coastal economies."

"Unfortunately, this is not the first instance of Vice President Cheney choosing political gain over the health and welfare of the American people and our natural resources," added Thompson. "It's time the vice president is brought out of the shadows and held accountable for his actions."

Sue Ellen Wooldridge, the 19th-ranking Interior Department official, arrived at her desk in Room 6140 a few months after Inauguration Day 2001. A phone message awaited her.
"This is Dick Cheney," said the man on her voice mail, Wooldridge recalled in an interview. "I understand you are the person handling this Klamath situation. Please call me at -- hmm, I guess I don't know my own number. I'm over at the White House."

By combining unwavering ideological positions -- such as the priority of economic interests over protected fish -- with a deep practical knowledge of the federal bureaucracy, Cheney has made an indelible mark on the administration's approach to everything from air and water quality to the preservation of national parks and forests.

When the lead biologist for the National Marine Fisheries Service team critiqued the science academy's report in a draft opinion objecting to the plan, the critique was edited out by superiors and his objections were overruled, he said. The biologist, Michael Kelly, who has since quit the federal agency, said in a whistle-blower claim that it was clear to him that "someone at a higher level" had ordered his agency to endorse the proposal regardless of the consequences to the fish.
An estimated 77,000 salmon washed up on the banks of the Klamath River. Last year, the government declared a "commercial fishery failure" on the West Coast. Above, dead salmon line the banks of the Klamath River in Sept. 2002. AP

This caused an incredible industry crash for the fishing industry, cost us the taxpayer millions of bail out money, almost destroyed two species of fish and the Native Americans who live in the area.

May Dick Cheney the heartless bastard rot in hell.

2. Sounds like Dick Cheney is about to find out that Americans
really don't give a crap about his secret meetings and expect that their government will be open and transparent.

Perhaps public education, that the Right disses, does create expectations of an open and honest government.

3. He thought he was so clever
Give the farmers some water for the season. How can he lose? I guess ruining the fishing industry for an entire region is just one way. Let's open that investigation.

14. It's a real heartbreaker... The Feds started all this w/Bureau of
Reclamation "Klamath Project" to terra-form marshland and wetlands into farm land. Farmers were enticed to this area by Gov programs to help get established. The local tribes got cheated out of control of their resources too.

and then pay for whatever it takes to put the ecological balance back.

8. I am getting sick of these investigations
What they ought to do is put every single one of the republican senators still in the senate, who enabled this type of corruption on a big box. Start an investigation into why they aren't being targeted for impeachment because they let bush and cheney get away with all the illegal, treasonist things they did...investigate the republicans. The house is too large but the senate isn't.

10. DUers were all over this when it was happening. Once again,
it takes the rest of the country a very long time to figure out what we've known for years.

It really makes me feel good about DU when I read things like this, but it makes me so sick that we've known about this for so long, and so many more crimes have been committed since. Crimes against our environment, crimes against our citizens, crimes against other countries, crimes against our finances....crimes crimes crimes.

When the mafia is running the country, there is nothing BUT crimes to count.

26. Don't kid yourself. They knew about it just as soon as we did but
they ALL turned their heads and ignored it. Just like everything else. I blame Dems just as much as Repugs for turning a deaf ear to the crimes committed by Bushco. They are all in bed together and we lose every time.

11. Why bother?
Rahm Emmanuel and Dem leaders in Congress have given Cheney a free pass until 2009.

Why bother to even investigate Cheney's crimes if Congress has no intention of holding him accountable?

Every Cheney crime that is revealed gives Dems one more chance to look bad for ignoring it. It hurts us too.

15. Maybe the beneficiary (Senator Gordon Smith) should be hounded out of office?
Just a thought. Smith was a driver on this and I think he is up for re-election in 2008, right?

It's for Oregonians to decide, but hopefully they will seriously consider it. Perhaps shining daylight on this episode between now and 2008 will help them with their decision?

When their votes aren't suppressed.

Apparently they are outnumbered by farmers or their votes are more suppressable or they were never going to vote (R) anyway.

24. This pisses me off!
I hate the Iraq war, of course, and everything Cheney did to get us into it. But, I live in salmon country. Our orcas and our eagles depend on Chinook salmon for their continued existence. Plentiful salmon means the ecosystem in the Pacfic Northwest can survive. This is unforgiveable.

27. WHAT? "damaging water policy to secure the farmer's votes" Follow the money.
For a few votes? I would look closer. Water is money to farmers.

"How much money did they give Cheney/the Republicans for the water?" is the question of the day.

You can buy votes with a few campaign ads, but first you need money.

Follow the money.

Who contributed to Bush-Cheney from the fish industry.

Who contributed to Bush-Cheney from industries that harmed the fish industry.

Who are the people from the fish industry going to support in 2008?
