But aren't they awfully expensive at $600 a crack?

4. They're expensive, overly proprietary, over engineered,
redundant, and will probably be obsolete in a year. What's not to love?

We might not be able to afford a retirement, but by golly, we'll enjoy what little we can afford, right?

Of course they'll be a howling success

Doesn't most of this crap become obsolete the minute it hits the ground? :sarcasm:

But hey, we don't seem to have a shortage of stupid consumers out there.

only I've had to make long trips to care for ailing parents and it wasn't feasible to haul the desktop on a plane.

I only got satellite TV last summer. I've been dragged into modern technology kicking and screaming all the way.

Oh and it'll do all that while you're listening to your copy of the Doobie Brothers Greatest Hits you just got off iTunes.

Yes, I AM old -- and seriously, the old Commodore 64 that was given to my son second-hand back in the early 80s was passed on to a charity at least 2 decades ago.

However, my real computer being a late 90s vintage Compaq Presario still running on Windows98 is almost as humorous...

I want it to be around when my current phone contract runs out so I can get one.

I'm not sure that makes me or others like me a whore. Some of us are happy with our Macs and Ipods and we look forward to the new products put out by Apple. Why is that so offensive?

I also look forward to John krakauer books, Michael Moore movies, Steelers games, Bruce Springsteen albums, the next generation Prius...what's the difference? It's all stuff that financially benefits someone else, but it's stuff I enjoy.

27. nice to see you have low reading comprehension
Did you bother to read the posts that were linked in the OP -- it was a discussion about how many ipods were going to sell. A little friendly bet on whether they would sell 50,000 before the end of the year. And I made it quite clear that I'm not an "apple fan" -- the only apple product that I own being a 1 gig ipod shuffle by brother in law gave me for Christmas.

The point of this thread was to have some fun with the fact that back in January some folks were suggesting that virtually no one would want one of these things. I personally have no interest, but was pretty damn certain that there were going to be lots and lots of people who would.

Are you an employee of Apple? A shareholder?

Why does you're being a nice guy or not have anything to do with the sales of a mobile telephone?

Was there some sort of contest with respect to relative predictions of the success of this telephone unit?

I'm curious...

30. a little friendly wager back when it was announced
Check out the linked thread -- there was a friendly discussion about whether the iphone would "bomb". I suggested that, while I had no interest in getting one, I was more than happy to bet that it would not bomb. The definition of "bomb" was set by the other party to the friendly wager as selling fewer than 50,000 units by the end of 2007. I could just wait until tomorrow and point out that I won the bet the first day the thing went on sale, but I figured I'd have some fun by posting about it today.

No big conspiracy. Just Friday follies.

Check out this article by Michael Malone

I think you will enjoy It.

The Cult of Apple
http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/IndustryInfo/story?id=2804821&page=1&CMP=OTC-RSSFeeds0312

-Snip-

I was on the receiving end of one of those Apple crazy swarms last week. It was both amusing and a bit disturbing: Apple fanaticism seems to have grown in both size and volume in last couple of years. And I must admit I knew it was coming the moment I borrowed a term for Apple loyalists I read in Fark.com -- "Macsturbators" -- and put it in the story just to inflame the especially demented.

---------------------

What I'm talking about are the thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands, of people out there whose relationship with Apple is obsessive and, one would think, unhealthy -- the people who, like crazed sports fans, will fight to the death defending a team that doesn't even know their names.

For years, the standing joke about these folks has been that they've "drunk the Kool-Aid," or been trapped in the black hole of the Steve Jobs Reality Distortion Zone, or that they are the geek version of Scientologists.

Oh Really, every time I post here on DU about Apple, I always get several Apple crazies giving me grief about my opinion.

And do you know what's really sad about these people, they are upset because I always post factual Information about Apple. For some odd reason, they think I should not be allowed to post anything negative about Apple.

Check out these threads .. these people are always stalking me.

Perhaps you are the one who is over focused rather than us Apple fans. I have used Apple products for nearly twenty years,
Computers and Ipods. I keep buying them because they are extremely functional, well-designed, and very dependable.
This is the strategy that builds customer loyalty. Other corporations should consider offering products that are as reliable as the
products Apple makes. There are very few products on the market that have this consistent quality. And FOI, I feel the same
way about my Hondas and for the same reasons.

several of my threads before you go accusing me of being overly focused.

And for your Information, I am not critical of the typical Apple user, I am only critical to those crazy Apple fanboys that go nuts on me every time I voice an opinion on Apple or Steve Jobs. Like It or not, DU Is a liberal forum, and I should be able to voice my opinion without having some Apple fanboy question my Integrity every time they disagree with my opinion, don't you think?

But yet, the Apple people seem to think It's perfectly fine for them to post their "biased" opinions about Apple without question, why Is that?

41. I've seen it before
I've seen people camping out to buy stuff from Cabbage Patch dolls to Playstations. When you analyze what people do with their free time, I don't think it's weirder than anything else. I camped out for concert tickets when I was younger and it is one of my best memories ever. I met a lot of people waiting on line and it was a blast. To each his own.

As for Apple Corporation. It's not the best and it's not the worst. If people buy anything commercial, they are supporting a corporation. From books and movies to food and drinks. It's pretty unavoidable in America. I don't get why everyone is so judgmental. I find it offensive and I think putting people down who have different interests than yourself is really close minded.

Every Apple user I know is constantly plugging the products, as if they are on payroll and personally receiving a commission. I've come to realize though that most of them share a common fascination with gadgets (toys) of all kinds, an enthusiasm that I just don't share.

75. There's a product that's even worse. A Harley.
Let's see here...you get a Harley and all of these things will happen to you:

First you'll throw everything out of the garage so you'll have somewhere to park your Harley.

Then you join the Harley Owner's Group.

Over a period of from a few months to a year, every time you see a garment that's got a picture of a Harley, or a Harley logo, on it, you'll buy it for your collection. Eventually all of your casual clothing has the words "Harley-Davidson" on it.

Next, your leisure and vacation time starts to revolve around the Harley. You go to Harley events. You go on poker runs. You make Daytona, Myrtle Beach and Sturgis all in the same year.

The car's worn out? Honey, look! We can get a car with a Harley logo on it!

Your fridge is full of Harley-Davidson Beer. You wonder why there's no Harley meat...Chopper Chops and the like.

Eventually you will find yourself in a tattooist's chair, having the Harley-Davidson logo permanently engraved into your arm.

I like my Mac a lot, but I never even considered getting an Apple-logo tattoo.

46. that's what I thought
in fact, even though I have no intention of buying an iphone, I couldn't imagine how anyone would think that there tens of thousands who would want one.

49. I'm platform & OS agnostic as well..
My last Mac was an early Titanium Powerbook a few years back, and it was a nice enough system. I think after a while spent in tech and related industries the shine of new product hype tends to wear off and the cynic takes over. At the same time, it sharpens one's eye toward "the next big thing" and the iPhone is clearly one of those products. The last item with this sort of on-the-ground buzz and enthusiasm was Nintendo's Wii. There's going to be a similar result here.

The iPhone has "moneymaker" written all over it.

53. If people want to blow $600 bucks + a contract, who am I to say no?
Personally, I think it's wasteful & stupid, but as long as I don't have to get one, I'm OK with it.:)

Maybe the pressure on the other companies will force their rates down to keep their customers, so maybe it's a good thing..who knows?

62. The downfall of this latest little gadget
The battery is permanently built into the phone, only has about 400 charges to it and then you have to buy an entirely new phone. And of course giving AT&T any business is a no no if you support the right to privacy.

76. GEEZ....You don't buy a new phone
-- you send it in to get the battery replaced!!

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that by this time next year, the Apple stores have techs in place to replace the battery for you so you don't have to send it in.

a fur sink or an electric turtle neck sweater too if they so desired.

Me personally, I don't need such gadgets. My life isn't that complicated. I'd rather save my money to finish my education and (when the time comes) to pay for a new (to me) car...I'm still driving a '93 Eagle Summit.

Gold star for those who have a new toy to play with.

Edit to reflect that I actually read the OP...often, I don't...:silly:
