"U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, the Cleveland Democrat running for president, frequently is described as a long shot. You'd also give long odds on Kucinich getting as many laughs as his famously quick-witted host during an appearance on "The Late Show with David Letterman."

Funny thing, though: Kucinich equals Letterman in the laughter and applause department during a taped appearance on tonight's edition of the CBS show. It airs at 11:35 p.m. on WOIO Channel 19...

He gets the laugh, setting up a genial conversation about the candidate's beliefs and backgrounds. When Letterman asks him if he has thought as far ahead as a possible running mate, Kucinich says, "Have to be somebody who would stand for health care for all and for peace."

1. He was great on "Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me" also
Edited on Fri Jun-29-07 08:22 PM by RufusTFirefly
Kucinich is quick-witted and wonderfully self-deprecating. He is definitely passionate about his policies and beliefs but that doesn't mean he is humorless. On the contrary.

ON EDIT: Here's a link to his "Wait, Wait" appearance

3. I wish I could be up for it.
I've been forcing myself to stay up until 10:00, which is a struggle. I'd never make it until 11:30. :yoiks:

I'm a morning person, obviously. ;)

Somebody post how it goes, please.

27. Thank you!
That was great. He was gracious, humorous, and kept the conversation focused ;) .

I thought he did a wonderful job presenting himself, the man behind the politician.

The audience seemed to appreciate him, as well.

7. Too bad we're not allowed to vote for him.
You know, he's not a "real" candidate. He "can't win", blah blah blah blah.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up. Might just have to tune in.

9. Letterman has been relentless poking Kucinich
in his monologues/sketches/bits.

I think DK shows chutzpah showing up for Dave's show, and thus providing future material for Letterman.
I admire anyone that find humor in themselves, laugh at themselves, and Dennis seems to be able to do just that.

will Letterman relent in his future jabs at DK?

i hope not.

14. Help!!
I was captivated by Dennis on Letterman then all of a sudden Close Captioning got stopped and now I cannot understand what he is saying! This rarely rarely happened before! Must be a republican turning off CC for hearing impaired people.

about the videos that I had not thought about :( He did not mention impeachment tonight but it was a good interview IMO.

21. CC came back on, but interview ended
I did see Letterman showing pix of Dennis' gorgeous wife. CC is working just fine now. Must be a repug cutting it off at some station on purpose to cut down # of viewers so they wouldn't know what Dennis is. My elder Aunt lost her hearing and depends on CC on TV now. Also I just met a guy that told me he woke up one morning with hearing loss in his 50's and now is almost completely deaf so there are many hearing impaired people out there. Thank goodness for transcripts so we won't miss out. Perhaps DUers should remember that there are hearing impaired DUers whenever they leave a link for Video so that they can leave a link for a transcript as well.

to see if there is a transcript.

Letterman was nice to him, asked some questions about his early life/childhood. Some questions about his political beginnings.

Dennis did fine, nothing really indepth of specific issues. But he did lay out his message: Peace, positive positions, positive purpose. Life responds.

Dave agreed to give him his vote due to his kismet meeting/marrying Elizabeth.

there was much more than that, just my take. .. edit: no mention of impeachment, but then no politics in detail to begin with.

23. When Dennis walked out
Paul and the band played Sixteen Tons. (Occasionally Dave shows a clip of Dennis singing the song in a room w/other lawmakers. I'm not sure what that is all about.)

Dennis looked better than I have ever seen him. His body language showed a little nervousness, but his smile shone through.

He wouldn't say anything bad about the other candidates, but when asked who he might choose for VP, he said it would have to be someone that believed in peace and health care.

As they were going to commercial, they showed Elizabeth in the green room. She was stunning, as always.

30. Yes, a good friend was mocked at school for always wearing
the same clothes. One can either come away from the experience with hate or compassion, fortunately Dennis came away with compassion and understanding :)
