Saw SICKO tonight --
Great response from the audience -- laughing, crying -- applauding

It moves you body and soul --

I think his greatest contribution is showing us our own humanity and getting us to wonder where it is reflected in our society today.

And, of course, attacking that old bug-a-boo "socialism" --

"Solidarity" as a dirty word --

Now we have to go out and get the bastards . . .
will we?

1. I saw it this afternoon and loved it
The scene with the firemen in Cuba touched me the most. But the whole film is just excellent. His best yet.

13. I agree about the Cuban firemen
"Don't hesitate to hug a brother"

All six in our group were :cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:

And like the above post, people in our theatre were laughing, clapping, booing and crying.

2. it really made me pissed off
It's a fucking national disgrace. MM's critics can take their charges of Anti-Americanism and shove them straight up their manipulative asses.

We deserve to be called out on this issue. I'm ashamed of the way we treat our people.

3. here's what I want to know
It's a powerful movie. I saw it with my mom. She works in the medical field and is so disgusted she can't wait for retirement. Her question was "how can the other countries pay for all this stuff?" I don't have a vetted answer but my supposition is that the US and the western-style examples in the film, Canada, England, France, all have roughly the same levels of productivity per capita but it's all a question of where the money is allocated. We pay more for health care than any other country but the money is siphoned off by the rich. We work harder than any other country but we are not given proper vacations, have abysmal quality of life issues, etc. The money's there to pay for it but only at the cost of fewer billionaires. As the British doctor said, he can have his million dollar home, big TV, and Audi. If he wants a four million dollar home and five cars, he needs a different system. The foreign way of life is about maximizing return on work for the masses while the American way is to maximize return on investment for the ownership class.

I'd be happier with this supposition if I had some real numbers to back it up. Where do we go to get them?

7. "how can the other countries pay for all this stuff?"
The answer is pretty obvious, although WE AMERICANS have been dulled to this: Other country's can afford this stuff b/c they don't have PROFITEERS standing in between the 'individual citizen' and their health care!

EVERYTHING in the USA right now is about PROFIT.....every last living thing! Humans, and their health care are COMMODITIES now, to be bought, sold, and traded.

17. You got it. It's all about who you are paying.
Right now, we are paying money to people who see it as their job to deny care when at all possible so they, the middle man, can profit. Can you think of a dumber way to go? For example, I pay over $800 a month for insurance whether I even go to the doctor or not. So we're talking over $9000 a year even if I don't try to get care. People in those countries can have a family of four that may have sick members and go alot to get care and they pay nothing. Boggles the mind.

a single payer.

15. $500 billion military
That's why they can afford health care and we can't (choose not to).

Health care is one more thing we will be able to afford if we withdraw from Iraq.

4. Here's some irony: My husband and I were to go see Sicko tonite and he came down with serious
abdominal cramping that wouldn't stop. He's currently at the local hospital in the emergency room and they are trying to determine if he has an appendicitis or something else....I am at home, because the kids are here and waiting for him to call back and give me an idea if and when he's coming home or if he has to have an Appendectemy.

Fortunately, for us, we have insurance....but my husband still has to sit in the ER for hours on end before being seen by a doctor.

8. Just came back from watching
Although many parts were funny, it was very moving. Specially when they showed patients being dumped in front of a shelter. That was just wrong. As an American Health Care worker I felt dirty and ashamed. How can Health care professionals do such thing???

10. As a nurse who's tried to deal with profit driven health care, I know what you mean.
I'm encouraging the doctors with whom I work to see this. I think they might decide to prefer a system that allows them to practice medicine.

Good doctors will always receive good compensation.

9. i saw the movie tonight too. audience had the same response.
i have heard so much, followed his interviews, seen the lengthy pieces of the film linked online, pretty much knew what to expect.

still, i found myself shaking my head in amazement & disgust (not at michael or the movie but at the extent of the way we have been duped by the health insurance industry in this country--when did things get so bad--how did we let things get so bad for so many? i mean, it hasn't been great for me personally but...)

i felt sad/down when i left. have been feeling that way for several hours now.

i guess i felt pretty down about our country, and was very impressed with france and england with the way they provide for their people.

(and of course, canada.)

11. I went to see it tonight also. I thought it was awesome.
My city was featured in the film, when Moore went to Windsor, Ontario. I thought that was cool.

I was a bit disappointed that there was not a larger turnout at the theater. I remember when i went to go see Fahrenheit 9/11, it was packed. I hope Sicko does better then his previous movie.

I liked the part where he donated $12 000 anonymously to that guy who is determined to ruin Moore, that was too funny.

Overall, I really enjoyed the movie.

14. Saw it tonight CATHARTIC
is the word I came up with. It was cathertic watching that. And realizing that there is no logical reason why we can't have universal healthcare in this country too.
