Playboy – Question 20: Were any future Al Qaeda members trained at the John F.Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School in Fort Bragg, North Carolina?

Gunaratna: Ali Mohamed was. He was a captain in the Egyptian military who came to the U.S. for advanced training. He received training at the John F.Kennedy Center. He came back again and joined the U.S.Army and attained the rank of sergeant in the Special Forces. He was a member of Al Qaeda. As I pointed out, he trained Bin Laden’s bodyguards. He trained the teams that operated in Somalia, Bosnia and Afghanistan.

Ali Abdul Saoud Mohamed, also known as Ali Mohammed (b. 1952) is an acknowledged Al Qaeda operative who was charged with the August 7, 1998 bombings of the United States' embassies in Nairobi, Kenya and in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. In October 2000, he pleaded guilty to five counts of conspiracy to kill nationals of the United States and officers or employees of the U.S. government on account of their official duties, to murder and kidnap, and to destroy U.S. property.

Mohamed is former officer in the Egyptian army's military intelligence units. In the 1980s, he cross-trained with the United States Army military unit, the Green Berets. He left the Egyptian army in 1984. He moved to the United States in 1985, became a U.S. citizen and joined the U.S. Army, serving at Fort Bragg until 1989. Mohamed's path to citizenship was helped by the fact he married an American woman from Santa Clara, California after a 6 week courtship. According to Cooperative Research, Mohamed was a Drill sergeant at Fort Bragg, and conducted clandestine military and demolition training through the Al Kifah Refugee Center. Cooperative Research asserts that Mohamed trained some of those involved in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

After leaving the Egyptian army, he apparently became an agent for the CIA (supporting the Afghanistan jihad) and an agent of Al Qaeda, which used him as an infiltrator into the U.S. He was very successful — he was hired to teach courses on Arabic culture at the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center. While in the United States, he helped train a number of jihadis, like El Sayyid Nosair (who killed Rabbi Meir Kahane, head of the militant, terror linked Jewish Defense League in New York City) and Mahmud Abouhalima, who assisted Ramzi Yousef in his 1993 attack on the World Trade Center.

Ironically, at the time he was training bodyguards for Osama Bin Laden, associating with clerics like Abdel-Rahman, and casing embassies in Africa (like the one in Nairobi, Kenya), he became an FBI informant.

4. Where is he now?

Officially he cut a deal in exchange for testimony on the 1998 embassy attacks, of which he was described as a mastermind.

So where is he now? I haven't seen that the government ever said.

Whose agent was he really? How is it that there's one of these guys working for the USG in some capacity at the center of nearly every "terror" plot?

But this example really seals it. Anyone ever hear where this guy is now? Peter Lance who featured him in "Triple Cross" doesn't seem to know either. Ali's got his own "undisclosed location" and nothing indicates that it involved incarceration in a justice system. Seems to me that this implies that in all his double-agentry and triple crosses he was from the beginning and ended up as one of "ours."

8. One of the threads that unravels 9/11

There are three opposing ways to look at this kind of double agent:

1. He was primarily a jihadist/AQ agent who "double crossed" or "triple crossed" the US and Egyptian armed forces.

2. He was a freelancer with no real commitments to any side, and easily moved from AQ to the Egyptian military to the US military as it suited his interests and spied on any one of them for the other for money.

3. The activities he was involved in were cooperative ventures between AQ, and the Egyptian and US armed forces.

If 9/11 was MIHOP, it will be proven by proving number 3.
