How many environmentalists does it take to change a lightbulb?
Edited on Sat Jun-30-07 01:18 PM by chaska
"Ten. One to write the lightbulb a letter requesting that it change. Four to circulate online petitions. One to file a lawsuit demanding it change. One to send the lightbulb lovingkindness (tm), knowing that this is the only way real change occurs. One to accept the lightbulb precisely the way it is, clear in the knowledge that to not accept another is to do great harm to oneself. One to write a book about how and why the lightbulb needs to change. And finally one to smash the fucking lightbulb, because we all know it's never going to change." Derrick Jensen

1. is that supposed to be funny? here:
How many Republicans does it take to change a light bulb?

Three. One to change the bulb, one to call the media and publicize it, and one to blame the electric bill on the Democrats.

2. I'd say it's about as funny as this:
Q: How many Republicans does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A: None, they only screw the poor.

4. No offense, but I wouldn't quit the day job if I were you....

No actually, it's not supposed to be funny. It's a commentary (an accurate one in my estimation) on the relative ineffectiveness of the current practice of protest by the left. Nine out of ten are just jackin' off and deluding themselves into thinking they're doing something. I'm no better, incidentally.

It's from the last page of Vol I of Endgame (a must read for anyone interested in changing the way things are). It was a response to another "How many..." joke made by an attendee to one of Jensen's public appearances. The former made no sense, logically, and/or etc. Sorry, I don't have it in front of me.

3. 462 republicans
How many Republicans does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

Four hundred and sixty-two:

1. Twelve to investigate Clinton's involvement in the failure of the old
bulb,

2. Twenty-three to deregulate the light bulb industry,

3. Sixteen to cut funding for alternative lighting R&D,

4. Thirty-four to cut the tax rate on light bulbs,

5. Fifty-three to design a block grant so the states can change the bulb,

6. Forty-one to talk with defense contractors about night-vision gear
instead,

7. Two hundred and eighty-three to pass a law making it illegal to
discuss naked bulbs (or screwing anything) on the Internet.
