Abortion-rights group says Thompson once lobbied for it
A spokesman for the GOP presidential hopeful says he did no such work. An ex-colleague calls the denial 'bizarre.'
By Michael Finnegan, Times Staff Writer
8:10 PM PDT, July 6, 2007

Fred D. Thompson, who is campaigning for president as an antiabortion Republican, accepted an assignment from a family-planning group to lobby the first Bush White House to ease a controversial abortion restriction, according to a 1991 document and several people familiar with the matter.

A spokesman for the former Tennessee senator denied that Thompson did the lobbying work. But the minutes of a 1991 board meeting of the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Assn. say that the group hired Thompson that year.

His task was to urge the administration of President George H. W. Bush to withdraw or relax a rule that barred abortion counseling at clinics that received federal money, according to the records and to people who worked on the matter.

1. It doesn't sound like a real smoking gun....
The Board Minutes gives him "Plausible deniability" to resurect a hoary expression from the Nixon Administration...

His word against the Board Minutes...

But it's a great headline to use against him should he be any kind of threat to Rudy or Mitt...

2. Maybe not for long
I wouldn't be surprised if a little digging uncovers some other people and documents that can corroborate Thompson's pro-abortion whoring. If his handlers can't lock this story down fast, the denials could come back to bite him in the ass, as often happens in these types of situations.

Interestingly, Huffington Post had the story up last night, but closed comment on it and made previous comments unviewable....wondering why.

5. He'd probably do the same for the Saudis if they paid him enough.
