China is sentencing their FDA people to death because of dangerous products
Beijing just sentenced its second State Food and Drug Administration official to death on corruption charges, for accepting bribes to approve dangerous drugs and products, according to the New York Times. Pharmaceutical companies allegedly paid Mr. Cao Wenzhuang $307,000, and paid Mr. Zheng Xiaoyu $850,000, to either speed or skirt the approval process for thousands of different drugs, many of which were counterfeited, deadly-dangerous, or both. Four other officials received long-term prison sentences for similar activities.

These events were at least in part influenced by increasing international shaming--in addition to the pet food and sea food scares, at least 100 people died in Haiti and the Dominican Republic from toxins in Chinese imported toothpaste.

. . .

"This is a harsh but probably necessary strategy to re-establish control over an under-regulated sector," said David Zweig, a professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

1. Now, that makes sense...lots of American dead pets, so kill the inspectors
....what about the incompetent American company executives and managers who accepted and perhaps even looked the other way on these products which added to their profit margins and bonuses? No accountability, no fines, no prison terms?

in the import and inspection of these products and the eeevil Chinese didn't drop them from the sky into our homes to poison our pets? ;)

4. This is a PR stunt
Sorry, although I am in favor of strict regulation of products and in some cases approve of the death sentence and these guys were really scum, no doubt, it really turns my stomach to know that China is killing people to improve their reputation internationally. In other words, China is killing people to increase its trade standing.:puke:

8. Maybe you need a similar PR stunt
at home although I don't support the death penalty anywhere.

11. Look at the potential for killing large numbers of people
that these businessmen criminals perpetrated. They should be put in prison and throw away the key. No I'm absolutely not in favor of the death penalty, but if you were put into a Chinese prison you might prefer it.

Let's not let our outrage at capital punishment obscure the fact that there is a very serious problem here. Societies everywhere DO have to get much MUCH tougher on white collar crime. Corruption kills. It is not victimless. People have a very mistaken notion that business criminals should get lighter sentences than street thugs. We need to change that--they need to get very long prison terms in average prison conditions.

12. Unbelievable
I am sure the government had some idea this was going on. And we are going there for the Olympics, for shame.

13. China actually gives the death penalty to millionaires
In China the death penalty is not reserved just for poor people like here in the good old USA.
