The Live Earth Pledge...have you taken it? |
|
1. To demand that my country join an international treaty within the next 2 years that cuts global warming pollution by 90% in developed countries and by more than half worldwide in time for the next generation to inherit a healthy earth;
2. To take personal action to help solve the climate crisis by reducing my own CO2 pollution as much as I can and offsetting the rest to become “carbon neutral;”
3. To fight for a moratorium on the construction of any new generating facility that burns coal without the capacity to safely trap and store the CO2;
4. To work for a dramatic increase in the energy efficiency of my home, workplace, school, place of worship, and means of transportation;
5. To fight for laws and policies that expand the use of renewable energy sources and reduce dependence on oil and coal;
6. To plant new trees and to join with others in preserving and protecting forests; and,
7. To buy from businesses and support leaders who share my commitment to solving the climate crisis and building a sustainable, just, and prosperous world for the 21st century.
Yeah, I know...it sounds better when Al Gore is saying it out loud.

I think these pledges and internet signatures are important. I've signed so many for impeachment and God knows what else. But it's a personal promise we should remember.
I turned off the lights in the kitchen too and I'm looking for that tote bag from the grocery for the next time I go shopping.

12. I've not had a car for 17 years |
|
I ride a scooter and when I cannot ride my scooter I use public transit.
I will soon live in a smaller apartment (500 square feet).
We can start decreasing global warming by moving into smaller living quarters. A couple of friends of mine and I were discussing this last night. They both have condos, not overly large, but their condos are larger than the HOUSES both of them grew up in.
There is no need for the McMansions being built today except to say...I got mine!!!!
We should also call for a moratorium on construction of new suburbs. There is more than enough living space in currently existing urban and suburban areas. I know, it's "telling people where they can live." Well maybe we need to tell people WHERE they can live so that they CAN live on the planet!
End construction of new highways. It should be seen as unseemly to drive an hour to work alone in a car.
Not only BUY locally but EAT locally as well. It takes a lot of fossil fuel to schlep vegetables to the large suburban supermarkets.
Eat seasonally. Things grow when they do for a reason. I don't think it's an absolute necessity to have a strawberry from South America in the winter.

I telecommute for work (I designed my job that way) so I drive minimally. I run an animal rescue as well, so public transit just won't work for me.
