Live Earth organiser AL GORE appeared onstage at the Tokyo, Japan leg of the charity extravaganza - as a hologram. The former U.S. vice-president wowed Japanese fans by making a live holographic video appearance from Washington, D.C. on Saturday (07Jul07). He told the crowd and a TV audience of millions, "Global warming is the greatest challenge facing our planet, and the gravest we've ever faced. "But it's one problem we can solve if we come together as one and take action and drive our neighbours, businesses and governments to act as well. That's what Live Earth is all about."

I didn't know holograms had been developed so well. We certainly don't see anything like that in this country. I know, I know... they would be used to eliminate jobs, not to fulfill a currently unfulfilled need.

One use here I can see is in the arts. If a stage around here installed a system such as what allowed Gore and all those shiny happy visual effects to be seen in Tokyo, that stage would have people three deep all around the block. To be able to see cinematic CG effects on a live stage, to be finally able to properly present fantasy and science fiction to a live audience, to be able to present facts even more convincingly, as in the video at the link, and eventually, to present entire films, with scenery, effects, and all, on a theater stage...

Why haven't we seen this technology here in the US?

... even though that's the broadcast of Tokyo's "performance" of the hologram, that's actually a Turkish language translation playing over him. The earlier commercials were also in Turkish. It looks like this UTube was recorded in Turkey.
