7 New Wonders of the World Chosen

LISBON, Portugal (AP) -- The Great Wall of China, Rome's Colosseum, India's Taj Mahal and three architectural marvels from Latin America were among the new seven wonders of the world chosen in a global poll released on Saturday. Jordan's Petra was the seventh winner. Peru's Machu Picchu, Brazil's Statue of Christ Redeemer and Mexico's Chichen Itza pyramid also made the cut.

A Peruvian in national costume held up Macchu Picchu's award to the sky and bowed to the crowd with his hands clasped, eliciting one of the biggest cheers from the audience of 50,000 people at a soccer stadium in Portugal's capital, Lisbon.

Many jeered when the Statue of Liberty was announced as one of the candidates. Portugal was widely opposed to the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

Another Swiss adventurer, Bertrand Piccard, pilot of the first hot-air balloon to fly nonstop around the world, announced one of the winners -- then launched into an appeal for people to combat climate change and stand up for human rights before being ushered off the stage.

4. Great. Just what Canadians need.
Next thing you'll know is that "Canadians" will be getting the same bad rap as American tourists.

Instead of pretending to be someone else, why not hit the streets and get rid of the monsters running the USA now?

Cowardice, sloth, greed. We're more than willing to "let George do it." We've never had a General Strike. We'd rather buy our democracy at Wal*Mart, using low-paid workers (in the military and in our classrooms), than engage in the essential "do it yourself" project. We'd rather be entertained. We treat the news as entertainment. We treat government as entertainment. We can gather in crowds of 100,000 in a stadium but sneer at those who'd gather 'impolitely' and make our comfortable little lives 'inconvenient' for an hour or two.

5. Modern wonders?
I think of all the wonders of technology and wonder what these people find wonderful in old piles of rocks.
Man has walked on the moon for instance.
New wonders of the world?

6. Perhaps it's because most were built without the
technological advances we take for granted.

11. I assume it's wonders that (still) exist in the modern world
Many of the wonders of the ancient world vanished long ago, such as the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.

7. Thanks a pantload, republicons
Edited on Sun Jul-08-07 08:57 AM by SpiralHawk
You republicon traitors to the American ideals have brought this shame and ridicule on America. Shame on you. Do something patriotic and resign from your corrupt, lying fat-cat party of greed, fear, and death now, and allow America to return to a place of honor in reality and in the eyes of the world.

8. Jeered because liberty no longer
exists in this land. Not with a capitulating congress and a "president/king" who cares not what we the people or the rest of the world thinks.

If the next president, whether Democrat or Repugnican, continues the failed policies of the last eight years, will anything change?

:sarcasm:

Don’t ever say it couldn't get any worse.

If the people in power during 2008 possess any intelligence, they’ll more toward adopting a non-intervention foreign policy.

12. This whole "new 7 wonders" thing is BS.
The whole thing reminds me of a similar online/text-messaging voting thing for the Greatest American, the result was Reagan getting voted the greatest American. :puke: This kind of stuff should be left for historians, not Joe Shmoes who are generally ignorant about history and thus are more likely to vote on nationalistic or political grounds or based on recent events.
