5. Big "D"
Read the rules to find out how and why.

We're just not that far underground any more.

6. Two capital letters
That's the huge difference right? It's still early but I've always been good at those "What's different about these two pictures" games.

7. What about
"Democratic underground" as a compromise? Actually I don't care much but if it will give you some peace that is cool.

8. Go over to General Discussion: Politics, and tell me. It's pretty obvious.
The small "d" part of our underground is gone, and the big "D" is here and in our faces 24/7, and if we don't agree, we're "trolls", "splinterists", and the like.

Just my opinion, though.

10. I've seen plenty of Dem bashing on this site--some of it justified
Do you really think that DU is by and large "party line or else?" I see it quite differently.

12. No, I don't, and that's what makes me so sad about the atmosphere
over on the other forum I mentioned. And, yes, some Dem bashing is, indeed, justified, but it is no longer tolerated to even QUESTION certain Dems over there.

It's sad, really.

18. Fair enough--I think both groups need to realize this forum doesn't decide the party's strategy
In other words, there's nothing to be gained from refusing to budge one inch from your position--tying yourself in all kinds of knots to do so--simply because this isn't where the people in power look to make their strategic choices. This is a place where we discuss our ideas and have the rare chance to discover the good points and bad points of various strategies, positions, etc. With that in mind, it is positively worthless to pretend that one's views or supported strategy have -no- bad points and -all- good points. We don't need to run dissembling PR for either too-slow/ineffectual congresspeople or hardcore radicalists, we just need to discuss what we think about them.

25. What do you mean it's not tolerated?
I see people questioning/attacking EVERY Dem candidate, regularly. It's tolerated just fine. They're not deleted, the posters aren't banned.

Unless you mean that people disagreeing with you is "not tolerating" it.

27. I don't see why people read disagreement as an implicit "and shut the fuck up forever"
My guess is it's just another disingenuous debate tactic that goes with the bizarre belief that discussions on these forums are all very high-stakes affairs that decide real policy.

31. Who's the opposition?
Third parties?

Progressives NOT in the Democratic Party?

Really - that shit gets deleted so fast from here it makes my head spin.

Or haven't you noticed the "Fuck Nader" avatars?

Try and slip a "Fuck Hillary" or "Fuck the DLC" avatar on for size - see how long it lasts.

22. I think there is some ambiguity. Maybe it needs cleared up in today's environment
"We welcome Democrats of all stripes, along with other progressives who will work with us to achieve our shared goals. While the vast majority of our visitors are Democrats, this web site is not affiliated with the Democratic Party, nor do we claim to speak for the party as a whole."

I think there are a lot of anti small (d) democratic forces let loose in the Democratic party and it relects on this board. Maybe it should be called the "Democrat" party.

21. Both are very problematic.
Edited on Sun Jul-08-07 10:18 AM by Perky
If is "D" then it assumes that the party is the underdog and insurgent...which puts us in the lesser position

Id it is small "d" then it is become a potpourri of views centers solly on the vilification of Bush and Right wing extremest, but as a result welcomes some what intolerant of disparate views and leans toward sometimes unreasonable positions rather than attempting find conciliation. More ardent than practical.
