Edward R. Murrow would be ashamed

Keith Olbermann is no Edward R. Murrow

By DOUG THOMPSON

...the most buzz is generated by his commentaries - long rambling tirades against the foibles of the current administration, accentuated with carefully-edited video and enough hyperbole to bring a smile to any carnival barker's face.

...Olbermann is no less bombastic or any less slanted than his rivals...Sadly, what the Olbermanns, O'Reillys, Limbaughs and others of their ilk spoon feed a gullible American public is not news or even solid information. It is partisan pap, spiked with hyperbole and laced with entertainment-enhanced glitz...

Comments being posted, fortunately, are asking Thompson the same question I had: Who peed in your cornflakes, buddy?

1. Thompson is a well-known FICTION writer. I believe DU has banned links to that site.
So don't take it personally if this thread gets canned.

10. Nobody is Edward R Murrow.
Edited on Sun Jul-08-07 11:27 AM by zidzi
Of course not..Keith Olbermann is his own man who is reporting with honesty from a station crawling with pit vipers.

One of Keith's heroes is Edward R Murrow and that's admirable..at least someone in the "news" business admires Murrow.

This doug guy sounds jealous.

15. That was pretty much my take on it.
I guess DU in general is not crazy about this site. That's actually a comfort to know!

I thought "Of all the Olbermann criticisms I've ever read, this is the first one I've seen that appears to be using his prior stint doing commercials for Boston Market" (he was promoting their lunch sandwiches, and this was during the height of his ESPN fame) "as a mark against his journalistic credibility." You really have to stretch for that one, I think.

Anyway, I did find it a heapin' helpin' of bull. Especially the part in which he implies that sportscasting is a natural breeding ground for the biased and the bombastic. Uh, no more so than any other form of broadcasting. One could say the same of religious broadcasting, political broadcasting or being a rock DJ. There are always going to be the biased and the bombastic, and those who are not. Sheesh.

16. Olberman is not the new Morrow
and we do not need him to be! HE is Keith Olberman, his own man.

To compare him to Limbaugh is just atrocious.

19. I finally got around to doing the Google search I'd been putting off
ever since the CHB articles about Stupid's mood swings and tirades appeared. Although it was a great story, it smelled strongly of gossip and I wondered about the guy who posted it as fact.

What I've been able to piece together is that Thompson moved away from DC in 2004, that he's been scammed by more than one "unnamed White House insider," and that he's grown bitter about the whole thing. I can certainly understand why. He'd been a good writer and earned a lot of respect.

Perhaps he sees Olberman heading down the road that got him badly burnt. Perhaps he sees Olberman succeeding where he failed, galvanizing public opinion in another medium. Or maybe he just got badly burned enough by fake White House insiders that any reminder of what he was trying to do is painful and he wants it all to go away.

I like the guy I've been reading about in his blog from small town Virginia. I'm willing to cut him some slack. I do disagree about Olberman. He is very much like the Murrow I remember from my extremely young years, reporting news and issuing comments that are clearly presented as such, not fact.

I think perhaps Thompson along with the rest of us have forgotten that objective news always sounds like it has a leftist slant. It's those darn facts that always sound so liberal.
