Wow! LAT Criticizes Live Earth in Headline!!!
Not a direct criticism, but sheesh. Here's what was on the front pagae of the three major newspapers' online front pages:

L.A. Times:

Inside story:

-----------------------------------------------------------

NY Times:

-----------------------------------------------------------

WaPo:

Not a peep from WaPo! How can they ignore it? I don't think I missed it... I saw other stuff under entertainment way down at the bottom, but not Live Earth.

1. Bob Geldof complained that it had no concrete goals
Bob--the goal was to raise awareness, at which it succeeded with flying colors. Your comment had the only purpose of giving RW media "controversial" cover. Thanks for nuttin'. :eyes:

2. Wow, what's Geldof's problem? You'd have to be an idiot to not "get" what Live Earth was about.
The point was crystal clear.

28. Geldof pre-Live Aid and Geldof post-Live Aid seem to be two compleltely different people.
It's a shame.

34. It seems like a very petty jealousy
of being out of the limelight. Ferchrissakes, Bob. Get on board or STFU.

9. But this is hardly just a concert. The other 2 had it on their front front page
And they all have Federer winning Wimbledon on their front pages. Why not just put that on the sports page? Because he tied Borg's record for a 5th straight win. It was exceptional that he won. The Live Earth extravaganza was exceptional as well and certainly deserved front page coverage considering its purpose/message.

10. what the heck are you talking about?
have you seen today's Post? here's the front page:

notice that the bottom fifth of the page is about LiveEarth? three pictures? three feeds to inside stories? and I am pretty sure that in Venus Williams, not Roger Federer.

or should it replace the story about 144 people killed in Iraq? or how the Administation is dumbing down expectations for the Iraq report? or maybe the piece about the local hospital struggling to provoide services to poor minority communities? how about the related article about indigenous tribes in the Amazon? in a company town, how about a nice conspiracy about roswell? which of those stories would you have spiked to make room for a concert?

12. I'm talking about the online page that I checked this morning.
Edited on Sun Jul-08-07 02:38 PM by cui bono
And that is clearly stated in the OP. Perhaps you missed that. I don't subscribe to the print edition if that's what that pic is.

EDIT: I just looked again and I did see this under "style", which is actually not where a concert belongs. A concert would be under entertainment. No wonder I missed it.

14. well, yes, that's the paper edition
the one that 930,000 (roughly) people saw on their front stoops this morning. and I see a link to the review on the front page of washingtonpost.com, as well. sure, it's not the headlines, but then I get the local headlines on .com, and that are all good ones, more important to DC than a concert that barely took place here. We got a speech from Al Gore and a song from Garth Brooks, whopee.

Or that you don't see the significance of it. Not sure which is more accurate.

19. well, seem like a paper in Washington
should be covering things that happen in, I don't know, Washington? not things in New Jersey (that's the business of the Times) So they put it where it belongs, in the Style section, where all concert reviews should be.

this was a concert, people. on cable.

what do you think the 'signifigance' of LiveEarth is? a bunch of people watching TV.

22. You really have your heels dug in don't you.
Style is for fashion. Concerts are music and that's entertainment.

Again, I'm sad about your apathetic attitude.

Oh, and now you say the paper should only cover things that go on in DC? Wow. You really believe that? What about Darfur, Iraq, etc...

24. no, I think they should give priority to things important to washingtonians
Edited on Sun Jul-08-07 03:19 PM by northzax
and concerts in New Jersey don't make the list, sorry.

And the Style section in the post is music, theater, arts, entertainment, fashion, lifestyle, advice and human interest. there is no "arts" section of the Sunday Post. Things that would go in the Times' Arts section, go in the Post's Style section. So it got the exact same coverage in both papers.

over them and won't be affected by global warming. No need for them to have a raised awareness about that, and no need to give them messages about conserving energy, clean sources of energy and becoming political in order to change things in DC as well as their own communities. This only applied to New Jersey. I mean it's not as if there were concerts on all 7 continents trying to get a message out to the whole world. What was I thinking?

26. My wife and I talked about this over lunch today
We talked about a missed opportunity.

It seems that the concrete action was the taking of the pledge. Couldn't there have been a donation asked for with the pledge to be used for some specific project?

Then at the end of the day they'd have raised awareness and also had $ 600 million dollars to be used to

1. give to the WWF to buy Brazilian rainforest or
2. rehabilitate the Aral Sea or
3. convert indigeonous populations into a different line of work besides burning trees.

We thought it was fine, but we thought there should have been something concrete accomplished too.

We'll see where this concert leads. It certainly was a help. Sure wasn't a hurt. We just thought there should have been a project accomplished by it.

21. You know, I don't think Al Gore is all that focused on MSM
I think he is more of a renaissance man than that. That's why I still believe he will enter the race. The MSM has never done him any favors. Why would they do so now?

Al appeals to the internet. He knows how it works and he knows he has a huge base online. There is a tremendous swell of support that he is gaining from groups like us. That's spilling over. His movie, his Oscar, Live Earth, his Nobel nomination -- the guy is rockin'. Screw the media.

31. This is what decades of planning and billions of dollars will buy you...the ability
to spin a potential sea change in Ameican thinking. Live Earth was a huge, noteworthy event and should have been on front pages everywhere. Something important happened...the huge RW investment paid off and made the important seem unimportant.

32. I saw, heard, and read exactly ZERO promotion of the Live Earth concerts.
Edited on Mon Jul-09-07 01:01 AM by kgfnally
And I mean none, at all, period, to the point I didn't know it was happening this weekend.

And I read a whole lot of news from multiple sources every day.

What happened? Why didn't I, of all people, know about this in advance?? It surely wasn't for lack of effort, because I knew it was coming, but I thought it was waaay later in the summer.... because I wasn't seeing any promotion for it!!

Was there the usual media blackout for progressive causes? I'm starting to think there was....
