For Woody Guthrie fans
Rolling along the Columbia, driving for Woody Guthrie
History - A Portland man recalls the month in 1941 that he spent showing the famed folk singer around the region

Woody Guthrie is a name that rings a bell.

Elmer Buehler's, not so much.

Yet a bright vein of the legendary folk singer's works -- including "Roll On Columbia, Roll On" -- has ties to a month of Buehler's driving skills.

Guthrie died 40 years ago at the age of 55.

Buehler keeps moving at the age of 96.

9. I've done work for union organizers from the 40s
seen the broken hands/fingers because they used music to get people to understand the common goal. I don't think any of us in this day can understand how bad a company can be when they are supported by the government. Be it coal mines/fruitpickers/steelworkers. The government always sides with the moneyed. Sorry for the disjointed thoughts

13. Your thoughts make sense to me
Our government sides with the rich and against the poor, it always has.

It's the best government money can buy.

12. I'm one of those people, too
A descendant of the westward migration of farmers and laborers.

My father-in-law was a construction worker at Bonneville Dam.

My Grandpa's dairy farm was electrified as part of Franklin Roosevelt's Rural Electrification Administration.

The Dust Bowl descendants like you and me have come a long way, but we still have a long way to go.

11. Thanks for this - have always loved Guthrie's music
When my son was in Baghdad, I sent him Guthrie's "Dustbowl Ballads" - he loved it. He went to Czechoslovakia on his leave - stayed in hostels and so many of the people he met, just wanted to listen to that CD. We both thought it extraordinary - but, then again, not.

Thanks again.
