ABC News - Bottled water
Edited on Sun Jul-08-07 06:02 PM by LiberalFighter
Sales of bottled water IMO should be prohibited.

They had a restaurant that stopped serving bottled water. Instead they provided cisterns/vases of water from filtered tap.

I've noticed while watching hearings on C-Span that they provided bottled water to members and those testifying. They should provide the water from their tap and use regular glasses although not necessarily real glass. They have a kitchen why don't they use it?

I do my part in recycling plastics but I'm sure that there are many that don't and it ends up in the dump. But that doesn't mean the trash company is sending what I set out for recycling where it belongs either. How about all the water or soda plastic bottles that are bought on the road, picnics, etc that end up in the trash?

1. Why don't they have coolers with nine gallon bottles
and recycled paper cups. I use my own cup at our office cooler.

2. ppl pay more for bottle water than they pay for gas yet they also pay taxes for clean water
don't see people screaming for cleaner tap water or about the high price of bottled water.

I don't drink it if I can avoid it.

3. What about cartons or glass?
Or would that not make much of a difference environmentally?

4. We have a little Brita filter on our tap, which while maybe not perfect,
renders our (shitty) Las Vegas water odor-free and perfectly drinkable. It's about 30 cents a gallon to buy the filters, and that's a great investment in my book when a 1.5 liter bottle of Aquafina is $1.79 at 7-11.

5. Bottled water is often no cleaner than tap water.
And then there's the huge problem of the plastic bottles. Not only do they litter up the landfills, but it's been shown that plastic molecules leach into the water itself, especially if the bottle is repeatedly re-used. So there goes that bright idea of re-using the same bottle filled from a filtered source. Though when traveling I've been known to fill up a plastic bottle to take along, figuring a few times now and again won't kill me. But I try not to make a habit of it.

At home I use a Brita pitcher.

6. 75% of bottles end up in the trash, apparently.
An enormous, horrible waste.

Maybe a dollar a piece deposit would make a difference.

Or go back to what we had when I was a kid, living in a town with undrinkable water: huge refillable water coolers in every house and office.

My well water smells and tastes awful -- it's a nightmare of filters around here... trying to figure out a solution because I will not go the plastic bottle route (rather pay for the ritzy water in glass, if I have to).

7. I used a water service when I lived in a town with poisoned water
courtesy of the US military. The 5 gallon carboys were recycled back to them when I got new ones every week.

The town water was barely safe enough to shower in, although bathing wasn't recommended for a long time, only showers.

9. Can you get a water delivery service?
My family doesn't use it but I've seen Crystal Springs deliver those big refillable water cooler bottles to businesses. If the 5 gallon is too heavy for you to lift they do come in 3 gallon too. the bottles are refillable so do not end up in the landfill.

10. I should find out about that for our area.
I was worried that they just threw the big plastic bottles away, which is better than throwing several dozen little bottles away, but still. If they reuse the bottles, I could be on board with water-in-plastic.

12. Those delivery bottles are a different plastic.
I don't remember the name of it anymore but it's not the same plastic name as 2 liter bottles.

8. You're not from Las Vegas, Phoenix, etc. without bottled water . . .
...one might urge Aquafina or some company to develop a "bottled" water dispenser that would dispense 16 oz. of chilled water at a time for a quarter or two - bring your own bottle. You would have to overcome hygiene issues etc but there has to be a better way than selling case after case of plastic bottles that just end up in landfills.

11. My Ace hardware has that out front with the pop machines.
The machine is hooked up to the water supply and filters the water. Most people buy it by the gallon. But you can fill up anything you want.

Most of our supermarkets in the Phoenix already do that. Our corner Safeway has a 24 hour outside dispenser and all of the Water and Ice C-stores have the same. BYOB.

13. Next will be bottled oxygen
I'm dead serious.

Don't let this small 5 1/2 inch high cylinder fool you. This little unit packs about 100-150 breaths of 90% oxygen with just the press of a button on the top. It weighs just under a pound and the small size makes it great for carrying in a back pack, brief case, purse or pocket!

Only $27.95 for 30-50 breaths of oxygen with this 10" tall can.

14. We use bottled RO water for tour smallish 55 gal salt water tank
maintenance. We get it at Sunflower Market and refill the same 15 gal jugs week after week @ 0.39 a gallon. We use a PURe jug in the frig to filter our tap H2O for human consumption - we call it Delightful Water.

15. I drink our water,
though I recognize that I have the advantage of good tasting, clean water from my well. Before I retired, I was not fond of the water in the community where I worked. But I never really bought bottled water. I know I drank it a couple of times, but I agree with your points about the plastic packaging, etc.

23. I also have my own well.
The water is hard and full of minerals (I live in a town called Mineral Wells), but it is good water and free of chemicals.

Oh yeah, and no water bill!@

18. Relative to the water
Most city water systems have so much sodium in them that it is causing obesity, too. My Step-dad needed to lose some weight, so his doctor told him to start drinking low-sodium water (purchased in 5 gal bottles). The weight came off almost immediately!
this is a huge problem with obesity no one is talking about, but should be. Yeah, now even the water is killing you!

Might as well be on a high fat diet, become an alcoholic and a drug addict cuz your gonna die just the same! (TIC)

19. I stopped drinking bottled water exclusively after
reading too many articles that said it was no better than tap water and in many instances WAS tap water.

I'll buy a bottle of water occasionally, like when I forget to pack water in my scooter and I'm going on a ride.

21. Worked with a guy years ago who told me...
when he was a kid he had a job at his local 7-11.

One day tyhe boss came flying in and all the gallon bottles of no-name "Crystal Clear Pure Spring Water" came flying off the shelves.

Seems they were filled up in the back from the store's hose in the wee hours and the town had just put out an alert about contaminated water in the area.

20. Bottled water has no fluoride
I heard that people who drink a lot of bottled water, are getting more teeth cavities, especially in children.

22. Problem is most restuarants don't filter their water - and I'm not about to drink Phoenix water!
It's very important here so I buy reusable bottles and fill them myself or I buy a "disposable" one and reuse it a lot. But, I do admit to asking for bottled water in restaurants and don't see that changing any time soon. Of course, I take the bottle with me to reuse, so I guess that helps some!

24. Not only that, but...
anyone walking around with a bottle of water should be shot on sight.

Andy Rooney just did a rant about bottled water, and for once I agree fully with him.

I'll even go him one further and say that the obession with walking around with this tasteless artificial breast to suck on signifies everything wrong with the modern world.
