My 79-year old dad carved this, inspired by some pics
I sent to him after the big DC protest in January. So, for all you protesters and lovers of peace, this one's for you:

22. You could take a series of professional quality photos
of all of his work, artistically arranged, and then mount a show of the photos. Tell him it's not for the stardom--but for the message. News reports of the show would help to get the message out. Many newspapers would be delighted to feature a longish article on such a person and his work. You could submit an article plus photos, or you could call the feature editor and show him/her the photos. The paper probably would assign a reporter. Or even without mounting a show of the photos, you could show the feature editor the photos and ask if he/she would like to do a story. Your dad's age would make the story even more itneresting to the newspaper.

Of course, there is always a risk with any sort of publicity, since freeptypes are nasty and given to threats and vandalism--and in a few cases even violence.

61. That's actually a very good idea.
Photos would allow him to share his work with others and still keep it! At least consider putting them up on flickr so the rest of us can enjoy more of his work!

And yes, Dad started sculpting birds years ago, and progressed on to these little scenes. He did a great one of a Katrina victim last year but I don't have a pic of it. Here's Dad with a figure in his hands that he's working on. The sad thing is he was diagnosed with macular degeneration last year, so he's carving while he can. :(

Edit to add: that's two figures, a wedding couple. Not sure where he's going with that though...

Reminds me of one of the first Peace Protests here after start of Iraq War when a busload of patients from an Assisted Living Facility pulled up and wonderful senior citizens...some assisted with walkers came off that bus with signs... It had me in tears thinking of the effort they made because they care so much about their country that with their failing health and impairments they were determined to make their presence known at that demonstration.

Since the carvings seem to be of our wise elders...it's what brought this to mind.

A big hug to your incredibly talented dad. :grouphug:

56. It speaks.
It is the essense of folk art: telling the story of ordinary folks.

I see a black person, brown person and older persons. A man with a flag. I see defiance and some anger and sorrow expressed.

There it is. The piece tells it.

CHAMPION!

I can see why your dad doesn't want to part with these (I make quilts, and I could never sell my babies, though I've been known to give them away). But maybe some sort of exhibition could be arranged: possibly a local art gallery, bookstore or library? These sculptures are just too moving not to get a wider audience.

Thanks for sharing your dad's work with us.

has made a beautiful statement there, and in the figure with the amputee vet. Give him the thanks of a grateful admirer, and hold on to this man for dear life. My Dad, a WWII hero and veteran of the Korean War, who opposed this administration and everything it stands for, died in January. While he was still alive, I told him how much I loved him and how proud I was to be his daughter, but it's never enough. Peace to you and your wonderful father, and thanks again.

89. Beautiful!
Please tell him thanks. His work reminds me of another woodcarver--my dear step-dad who passed on 3 years ago. That's the highest compliment I can give your dad.

97. Brought tears to my eyes.
My dad-in-law was a woodcarver. They are a special breed. Our dads are no longer with us.
Please give your wonderful father a big:hug:.

(Love his 'stache!)

104. No, but my DH just printed this thread up so I can send it to him. Thank you all!
He must have printed it in a large font (good for my dad); it's a total of 29 pages! Hours of reading fun!
