Do you boycott anything?
The only brand I consciously think about boycotting right now is Gillette, because of their testing on animals. I will admit their Fusion razor is excellent - they mailed free samples to everyone so I tried it, but I'm not going to buy it because it's Gillette. I'm taking it for granted that almost everyone on this site boycotts WalMart/Sam's Club, but what other products, brands or companies do you boycott?

37. Interesting. I buy Citgo every chance I get.
Chavez' "dicatatorial powers" don't bother me nearly as much as do those of the houses of Saud or Bush/Cheney. Here is some information about Citgo, in case you are interested:

82. So do I.
People keep talking about Chavez shutting down a TV station but its not like he was clamping down on a free press. That channel was nothing but a propaganda network worse than Fox News for corporations trying to overthrow his government and seize the oil. Chavez's election was more honest than Bush's.

61. There's no such thing as ethical oil
There's no "good" oil company. I'm VERY troubled by what Chavez is doing in Venezuela, and that's why I'm boycotting Citgo. A left-wing dictator (Stalin, Pol Pot, Chavez) is just as bad as a right-wing dictator (Bush, Hitler, Mussolini).

63. Companies like Scottrade, E*Trade, etc are still brokerages.
Since you do all the research, the commission you pay to them is smaller than a full-service broker like Jones, however, you still pay a broker to execute the transaction.

I invest entirely through Scottrade, and feel comfortable doing so because I was an Edward Jones broker back in 2003. :)

Nike, the CEO's interview in The Big One made me decide he's never getting a dime of my money. I can't control all the weasels my money goes to, but him, I can.

Exxon, Shell, BP, all predator companies with overly fat CEOs. I usually buy Brand X, but I'll drive extra exits on fumes to avoid those sleazes, buy five buck's worth to get me of the interstate and to another station if there's no alternative.

Nabisco, the parent company, R J Reynolds, killed my mother and contributed to my dad's death.

I buy two loss leader prescriptions at WalMart. My grocery shopping is done across the street at the closed union shop.

any gas station except for Citgo. Even with Hugo's alleged flexing of muscles, they are the only gas company giving back to their own but also helping our citizens who need it most. All the other gas companies (as far as I know) put their money in their pockets and walk off. When Cit go gives to US citizens who can not afford to heat their homes in winter, that is a big thing for me and I feel the need to support it. By supporting Citgo I also help US citizens that are in need.

For close to 10 years, I've been boycotting EVERYTHING Proctor & Gamble (including Gillette) because of their refusal to stop testing on animals. There was one time I accidentially bought a roll of Bounty. When I realized it, I gave it away!

If anyone wants to know, P & G TORTURE these animals, then throw them (half dead) into a pile to die an slow agonizing death. There are other ways to test these products, but those few millions for the new equipment would cut into the CEO's bonus now, wouldn't it?

I also boycott both of Sam's places.

on edit: don't buy anything from China anymore.

43. If it's from an RIAA member, it's not worth stealing
And I don't pay those store licensing fees directly. I tend to tune out what I do hear when I'm shopping; it's as irrelevant and useless to me as canary diapers.

I work afternoons, so I don't have a lot of time to go to bars, and I don't eat out as a rule, except to grab something on my way to work.

I prefer classical music and jazz where and when I can get it. And yes, I'll happily download an unattributed performance. And yes, I'll go out of my way to make certain the ones that ARE attributed are not RIAA member performers.

I don't blame you for finding that hard to believe, but my behavior is what constitutes something called a boycott. Maybe we should have a thread about boycotts, and what people boycott...

although I think of it more as changing my long-term habits rather than boycotting.

Professional sports (alright, I just don't like them, but still, it's an ethics thing as well)

95% boycott (sometimes I slip, but generally I avoid them):
All the Target-type stores and brand name clothing; I no longer buy new clothing. I'm good with thrift shops.
Restaurants that allow smoking

Partial boycott of chain grocery stores - I switched to community-based small grocers for produce, bread and dairy with some costco trips and small runs to the chains when needed

Mainly I'm trying to just reduce the amount of things I buy overall.

49. Oh, yeah..........
Walmart/Sam's Club, of course, Starbuck's because of their trade practices, don't buy any non-fair trade coffee, Sears (shoddy goods, particularly appliances), don't drive, so don't worry about the gas stuff, don't use P&G, Disney, don't purchase processed cake mixes or biscuit mixes or any of that crap, mass-produced baked goods, anything over-packaged and not recyclable, plastic bags (although I found that my mesh and canvas bags are likely to have a plastic bag dumped inside them stateside.....bizarre), and won't purchase mass produced jewellry or any diamonds. Don't go to fast food places. Won't purchase bottled water, period, and don't drink coke or pepsi products.

I don't own a television set, so that puts all programming out of the house, thank you.

Don't eat any foods or use toiletries from China, don't buy Nike.

Because of GM modifications, avoid anything with corn products, soy products, cottonseed oils, and canola.

And yes, that means that my food bill can be horrendous, although I do get a box of fruit and one of vegetables, all grown in the district, every two weeks, for $24.00. It's part of a cooperative food share programme. I also live in cooperative housing, which means that the appliances and all work in the apartments is done by cooperative groups.

Why go to the effort? Because every purchase one makes, every single day, grows the world that we pay for.

I boycott all Anheuser-Busch products since they are not a union-friendly company.

I haven't been to one in years. Dominos, Fox Noise, most grocery chains-I buy local, fast food. There's more but these are the ones I can think of right now.

57.  I try to avoid
anything that adds unnecessary, non-biodegradable trash to the mental and physical garbage heap. In theory I would love to boycott all multi-national corporations, but I wouldn't be able to exist without being naked, homeless, and living off the land. Course that day may be coming.

I am also going to start boycotting Coors and Anheiser-Busch.

Yeah, I said it.

85. I try to buy corporate as little as possible.
Its really the only thing you can do since so much of our economy is based on sweatshop labor and harming the environment. I try to buy local or not buy at all as much as possible. If I must shop at a big corporate store Walmart is out of the question of course.

92. My family has boycotted Union Oil /76 gas since 1949
:-) My dad was on strike with them in '49 and they broke the union there. I grew up in a household that never bought their gas after that and it stuck. I will NOT buy their gas to this day in honor of my dad.

I won't shop at Walmart or Sams either. Coors beer too.

Are there any companies that specifically support Pat Robertson or his ilk? I would very much like to boycott them. (I could pass on names like that to my associate pastor who can't stand them either.)

I's also like to boycott anyone responsible for the massacre in Darfur. Are there companies that are supporting this genocide?

102. WalMart, Exxon/Mobil, Coors, Domino's Pizza...
I've shopped at a WalMart before, but never willingly and I avoid it unless there's no choice. My parents have boycotted Exxon/Mobil ever since the Valdez spill, and I've never bought gas there - nor do I plan to. Coors I'll still drink but I won't pay for it, and Domino's... Well, their pizza isn't great. Besides, we have Abo's Pizza in this area, and that stuff is just great.

Also, I never plan on owning an American car. I fell in love with Subaru years ago, and I'm sticking with them.
