Bush faces Republican revolt
Strategy disputed. Iraqi leaders say withdrawing troops would cause disaster
SHELDON ALBERTS, CanWest News Service
Published: 3 hours ago

America's growing political crisis over Iraq deepened yesterday as Democrats in the Senate outlined plans for a series of critical votes aimed at driving a wedge between President George W. Bush and Republicans who have lost faith in his war strategy.

Even as the White House scrambled to prevent a slew of Republicans from calling for the withdrawal of troops, Iraqi leaders warned a hasty American retreat would bring catastrophe.

"This could produce a civil war, partition of the country and a regional war. We might see the country collapse," Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshiyar Zebari said. "Until Iraqi forces are ready, there is a responsibility on the United States to stand with the (Iraqi government) as the forces are being built."

The Iraqi government's alarm over U.S. plans was triggered by weekend comments from White House officials, who said Bush may announce a gradual withdrawal of American troops as a way to keep anxious Republicans from abandoning the administration on Iraq.

Five senior Republican senators have called for a reduction of U.S. forces or a change in strategy on the Iraq war.

The sudden collapse in support was triggered by Senator Richard Lugar, a longtime Bush ally and the ranking Republican on the foreign relations committee, who said the recent U.S. troop "surge" was not working and American forces should redeploy by mid-2008.

7. I agree with this... and the revolt has no teeth because they still will vote for the war
So in their world a revolt is when you cross your arms, make a 'hmrpf' sound and sit on your ass and do nothing.

Man if only Sam Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine, Patrick Henry, Ben Franklin and the other forefathers had just done this!

These Republicans will show those guys what a REAL revolution is...

:shakes head:
