"More than 20 mortar shells fell today at 4:30 pm (BLT) near the residence of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki inside the Green Zone," the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The source added "the destination from where these mortars were launched was the eastern side of Baghdad." The source declined to say if there were casualties or damage caused by the attack. Earlier, eyewitnesses said a dozen mortar shells fell onto the fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad on Tuesday afternoon, while billows of black smoke could be seen from nearby areas.
"About ten mortars fell onto the Green Zone only minutes after 4:00 pm (Baghdad Local Time), while sounds of explosions were heard from the nearby areas," an eyewitness told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).
Another eyewitness told VOI that "billows of black smoke were seen from a nearby area rising from the Green Zone." The Green Zone in central Baghdad is the seat of the Iraqi government and parliament offices as well as the U.S. and British embassies compounds.
