Antibiotic resistance countered

US scientists believe they may have found a way to stop the growing problem of bacteria becoming resistant to current drug treatments.

They have found drugs called bisphosphonates block an enzyme used by bacteria to swap genes, and acquire or spread resistance to antibiotic drugs.

They also showed that interfering with the enzyme could destroy drug resistant bacteria cultured in the lab.

The study appears in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

4. This is great news -

A family member was in the hospital for 8 months.

There are so many infections that they get from just being in the hospital - and most are
resistant to antibiotics. The ironic thing is, they need antibiotics to make them better, and the antibiotics make them sick by breaking down the good bacteria. Then they get infections that are resistant to antibiotics. It's awful.

8. Phosphorous acid has apparently been used

to stop root rot (phytophthora infestans) in trees for some years now (several decades), and another name for that is phosphonic acid (not phosphoric). I wonder what the links are between bis-phosphon-ate and phosphon-ic acid, besides the PO3 group.
