My state paid out in unemployment benefits during the last 10 years what the war costs in 3 days. |
|
"Between July 1997 and April 2007, there were 740,593 initial claims filed for unemployment insurance, and a benefit issuance of $1,340,344,321.00." (Utah)
The war now costs 12 billion per month, $400 million a day.
So, why don't we talk about the costs of this war? Is it unfeeling to talk about the money when lives are being lost? Do Americans "get it"?

1. Americans Will Pay For War, not Healthcare, not Schools, not Quality of Life |
|
But we will pay for anything with the word War attached to it.

3. You are exactly right. I said the same thing to a freeper on my |

veterans' board. He was harping about health care for illegal immigrants and how much money it cost the taxpayers. I said, "Let's talk about how much money we're pissing away on this war...that doesn't seem to bother you too much."
That, of course, changed the argument to the fact that I "don't support the troops."
Fucking morans...

I think that because we experienced that war far differently from what Europe and Asia experienced. Aside from the U.S. soldiers that were in combat, the rest of Americans had a fairly positive time throughout WWII. For Europe and Asia, having war on your doorstep probably turned them off to war entirely. Also, Europeans and Asians faced starvation, devastation, and an unsecure future. That's why they built strong social safety nets for themselves like pensions and national healthcare plans.
We haven't had war on our soil since the 19th century. That's why we love it so much. It's a fantasy world for us. We hear the words, "we're going to war", and we cannot open the checkbook up fast enough.
