Clinton/Obama vs The Top Three Republikans
Edited on Tue Jul-10-07 10:15 PM by leftist.
I was listening to Hannity earlier today (yeah, I know) and he seemed particularly giddy at the thought of two of their three front runners (Romney, Thompson, and Giuliani) joining together for the ticket. This has been suggested here on DU with respect to Obama and Clinton (sorry Edwards fans) and this got me thinking about a Clinton/Obama ticket vs any combination of Republikan front runners. I'm from NYC and lived there during Giuliani's reign and I "like" Giuliani as a candidate because I think he's incredibly easy to beat (anyone from NYC or NJ, or really anyone who's been paying attention over the last 10 years knows this is true). So I started sizing things up:

If Romney is the candidate just about any Democratic ticket can win and it doesn't matter who the VP is.

If Giuliani is the candidate a Clinton/Obama ticket could win by a) just being themselves and b) playing up the fact that NYC isn't going to elect Rudy and that's what Rudy is trying to run on (i.e. being mayor of NYC on 9/11 - and as a side-note I think the Democrats should have pushed 9/11 harder during the 2004 election because the places where it happened - NYC, DC, and PA - aren't voting for Republikans who run on 9/11).

If Thompson is the candidate and Romney is the VP it's another easy win regardless of who the ticket is. But ...

If Thompson is the candidate and Giuliani is the VP, how does DU think this will go?

It's late and I'm drinking and really just typing this out for my own benefit because I need to get my head around it, but in the event that someone does actually read this and feel the need to respond, what do you make of a Clinton/Obama ticket vs a Thompson/Giuliani ticket?

1. No way. they are not fond of each other and they would want another for vp
Obama would chose someone who compliments him and is close to his ideas. He actually is alot more progressive than many think because running as the first African American president who's viable as well as thinking of the GE, he has to go less progressive .
Clinton is DLC and she would choose another DLCer. Bayh or Vilsack are probably her choices.

3. I hear you ...
... I guess I'm just skipping ahead and hoping all this DLC nonsense *dies* and that a good ticket emerges. Note that I am NOT NOT NOT a fan of Hillary but the idea of a Clinton/Obama ticket does appeal to me because it cancels out the "in-experience" argument with respect to Obama and gets him on the ticket while keeping Hillary's name recognition with "independent" voters ... and I think a dual "minourity" ticket would appeal to voters as well ...

Again, I'm just thinking aloud here and playing around with situations ... but thank you for the reply!

2. I think it would be another Clinton/Dole race, and you know that outcome!
Freddie has a lot of baggage in his background, the most prominent is being a lobbyist for years. Rudy being second tier wouldn't help. There are so many strikes against Rudy, like denying the police & firefighters the communications they said was mandatory (before 9/11)! Insisting that it was OK to get back to work in NY's most dangerous air compromised areas so the damn stock market could get back on line!

I could go on and on with arguments against those two AH's. I suggest we wait and see who ends up being the two opposing candidates and then slaughter the opposition!

4. Agreed, and thanks for the reply.
I'm just playing around with ideas here. I agree with you, if it's Rudy then it's the Democrats in '08 because he's just too easy to beat. He was only popular for a few months and that was *after* 9/11 and also *completely* due to the fact that he had to run around in the rubble of NYC (because his office was in the WTC) and when compared to bush/cheney trying to hide and run away, well, Rudy came off looking a bit more noble. Still though, if Thompson is the candidate with Rudy as a VP, I wonder if it will appeal to so-called "middle of the road" voters in much the same way as John Wayne movies do.

5. I think the John Wayne idea had traction a number of years ago,
but it lost a lot because of Shrub. He played that John Wayne, bow legged, Texas drawl, tough talkin' Texan Prez. Guess what? He f'ed it up! I doubt that plan would work again!
