Polygamist's Son Jailed For 180 Days For "Having Sex" With 13-Year-Old Girl
Imprisoned polygamist's son himself jailed for sex with 13-year-old girl

William Green, 19, stands with his lawyer David Leavitt,
left, as he is being handcuffed by a bailiff after
sentencing on sexual battery charges for having sex
with a 13-year-old girl, Tuesday, July 10, 2007, in
West Jordan, Utah.

WEST JORDAN - A judge today sentenced the son of an imprisoned Utah polygamist to 180 days in jail for having sex with a 13-year-old girl. William Green, 19, must avoid pornography, stay out of Internet chat rooms and pay a $500 fine, 3rd District Court Judge Royal Hansen said. He met the victim on MySpace, a Web site.

"He's a remorseful kid," his attorney, David Leavitt, said. "He's married and has full-time work. I think you'll see this is a blip on the radar screen." Green was charged with rape but pleaded guilty in May to two counts of misdemeanor sexual battery.

His father, Tom Green, 58, went to prison in 2001 for having sex with a 13-year-old girl when he was 37. The girl was the first of five women he took as wives. Tom Green was also convicted of four counts of bigamy and with criminal non-support for the thousands of dollars in state payments made to support his 32 children. He is scheduled to be released Aug. 7.

Leavitt prosecuted Tom Green when he was Juab County attorney. He said William Green was a victim, growing up in an environment where there was no sensitivity to age-appropriate sex.

*** - Six months for rape? This is BULLSHIT. What the hell happened to statutory rape? What's the age of consent in Utah? After the zygote divides at least four times???

12. Dirty little not-so-secret of the LDS polygamist sects...

They have *lots* of kids, but only the first wife is recognized, the rest are "hidden" and the children of the hidden wives collect welfare and food stamps for their children. The money that accumulates with the polygamist husband can be astounding...

Here is an excerpt from an interview of a "hidden wife"...

Q: What about your family's financial situation? Poverty is common in polygamist families because there are so many children -- the wives are almost always pregnant or nursing. And your church practiced consecration, whereby group members pooled their income with the church, although you could withdraw some if you could prove you needed to. You also paid a 10 percent tithe. In fact, it's not uncommon for polygamous wives to need welfare and to qualify for it as single mothers, which they usually are in legal terms.

A: We were so poor, I used to watch other people's children for 32 cents an hour and collected aluminum cans and pop bottles for extra money. I was on and off food stamps for more than 10 years. I baby-sat my sister's children. The men usually think that each wife should bear as many children as possible, regardless of whether they can support them. And you're always pregnant. Our church requires you to produce as many children as possible, because little spirits are waiting to enter the world, via a male-female union, so they can be sent on their eternal path upwards and one day become Gods over their own worlds. I began to become aware of a real discrepancy between the spirituality of polygamy -- that it's the ideal marriage -- and the poverty and abuse that polygamous families actually live with.

Q: Isn't the Kingston group affluent enough? It's been estimated that their business empire is worth up to $150 million. In fact, in the last high-profile case involving the Kingstons, in 1983, the then-leader, John Ortell Kingston, was estimated to have assets of some $70 million. That came out because the state had sued him for massive alleged welfare fraud. It was charged that he had four wives and 29 children who had collected hundreds of thousands of dollars in public assistance over a 10-year period.

Court expedites appeal in teen sex case
By SHANNON McCAFFREY, Associated Press Writer
Mon Jul 9, 10:49 PM ET

ATLANTA - Georgia's top court said Monday it will move up by three months a hearing for a man serving a 10-year sentence on a child molestation charge for having consensual oral sex with a fellow teenager.

The state Supreme Court had set an October hearing on the state attorney general's appeal of a judge's order that Genarlow Wilson should be freed from what the judge called "a grave miscarriage of justice."

8. The worst part of this article to me is....
...William Green's lawyer is the same man that successfully prosecuted his father Tom Green and sent him to prison in 2001 for doing the exact same thing. And then the lawyer has the audacity to tell the judge:

"I think you'll see this is a blip on the radar screen."

I wonder if its just a "blip" on the radar screen of the 13-year old girl he raped???

Yeah, I mean you.

I didn't know until I read your post that this father and son together represented the complete population of an entire STATE. Um, duh?

16. Good catch...
...when you take this part of the lawyer's comments to the judge about his poor misguided client: "He's a remorseful kid," his attorney, David Leavitt, said. "He's married and has full-time work. I think you'll see this is a blip on the radar screen." Green was charged with rape but pleaded guilty in May to two counts of misdemeanor sexual battery."...

and then boil it down to its essence, this is what you get:

He's a remorseful kid
He's married
He has a job
This rape charge is a blip
And anyway, he owned up to it by pleading guilty

"So give em' a break, eh judge??? You know what its like to be a married kid with a job, and get into a "little trouble" every now and then, don't you? And this girl? Well, you know how it is around these parts {wink, wink}. I'm sure you've seen something like it before, haven't you? Why, its just another blip on the radar screen. These blips happen here all the time."

And as for his client being a victim himself in all this because of his father: "Leavitt prosecuted Tom Green when he was Juab County attorney. He said William Green was a victim, growing up in an environment where there was no sensitivity to age-appropriate sex."

I won't dispute the fact that when his father was being tried and later sent to prison, he was probably 12 or 13. But if the lawyer's assessment of the son having "no sensitivity to age-appropriate sex," is correct, why didn't he then, as the prosecutor in the case, recommend that the boy receive some sort of counseling? Or was it just "lock em' up if they're caught, and sweep everything else under the rug" in the hope that nothing will go wrong down the road?

Well, something went wrong....

17. victim?
I don't know. I think if my father got sent to prison for having sex with a 13 year old, I would think it might not be such a good idea for me to have sex with a 13 year old.

:eyes:

A chip off the old block, as they say. I think prison until he's too old to procreate might be in the best interest of the state in this case.
