A question for President Bush on immigration rose up like a ghost from the grave this afternoon in Ohio.


Only the questioner was a 13-year old blonde-headed girl, Jessica Hackerd, from Brecksville, Ohio, who immediately broke into tears after making her inquiry.


"Mr. President, I know immigration has been a big problem in the U.S. And what is your next step with the immigration bill?" Jessica asked Mr. Bush, during a question and answer period after a speech Mr. Bush gave to a Cleveland business group.


Mr. Bush's sarcastic reply -- a wry "yeah, thanks" -- drew laughter from the crowd of 400. But the attention caused young Jessica, who characterized herself in an interview afterward as very shy, to immediately tear up.

but the snip is only part of the story. Disingenuous or otherwise, he did meet with the girl and gave her words of encouragement. Whether his intentions were genuine (I doubt it) or a case of CYA (likely), the context isn't 100% clear.

Looks like he was cobvering his ass after the fact.

9. My take on it

Bush's first, knee-jerk, gut-level reaction was to be pissed about the question and attack the questioner: "Yeah, thanks" as in "Thanks for reminding everyone that I lost one, you little sawed-off twit." Certainly later (and probably after someone gave him a little talking to), he met with the girl to assuage the pain he caused her, but I think his initial, unguarded reaction was probably a truer expression of his feelings toward her.

This is a man who claims to be born again and says Jesus is his favorite philosopher, but ignores situations like Darfur and keeps our troops in the Iraq quagmire (because of his oil interests) where they are just sitting ducks. This is the man who will fly home from vacation to presonally attend to the Schaivo matter, but fly over New Orleans at 30,000 feet 3 days after Hurricane Katrina - just high enough to see some damage to the city but not high enough to see the people crying for help from their roof-tops.
