202-224-9655 (So Far - Just A Clue...)
202-224-9655

There was a brief call between someone at this number and Palfrey the day after Christmas in 1998. What's interesting is that 224 is the prefix for Senate phone numbers. The obvious question, then, is, who in a Senate office was talking to the DC Madam? Could it have been a senator? Senator David Vitter, a Louisiana Republican who has acknowledged calling her service, was not elected to the Senate until 2004. Or was it a Senate aide looking to take advantage of her services? Or was it a Senate employee working for the escort service? Or did someone dial a wrong number?

On-line searches of the number have yielded no clues. And I have yet to discover a searchable Senate phone directory from 1998. Thus, this clue remains just a clue.

That's probably possible, one that calls out to setup appointments or something that shouldn't see public knowledge.

18. Don't do that, we won't get anything. It'll probably just say that it's owned by the US Senate...
that won't be of any help.

What we need to do is look at documents from 1998 from the Senate, and see if they have this number.

47. We should also use logic to determine the phone schema
Phone numbers are often assigned by alphabetic order or room arrangement. Even if that exact number is not listed we should be able to determine what floor or suite of rooms the number is associated with. If we know that we can make an educated guess at the Senator.

63. I Searched Every Number From Every State For That Session. Nothing Even Close.
I don't think we're going to link this back to anyone directly. The fact you found another number only two digits higher makes me even more certain of that. No two senate numbers should be that close. Is it possible these numbers are generic type switchboard numbers that route calls? For example, if I call anyone from work they will see a number, but it's a generic one. If they called it back, they wouldn't get me.

But that number wasn't listed in that directory you provided, which listed a multitude of numbers for every single rep and senator.

67. The US Senate switchboard is (202) 224-3121
I think it's pretty certain that the US Senate has previously requested an entire range of numbers in the 202 area code with the prefix 224.

What we're looking at is probably phones within the offices of the senate, direct phone numbers assigned to every single senate phone.

69. Maybe its an under-the-table number
224s only show up with the Senate, it could be something someone paid for as a way to setup deals they don't want the public to be aware of. I wonder if this same number would pop up if we could somehow get ahold of the phone records of the lobbyists on K Street.

(202) 224-9655 is Unpublished or Unavailable
(202) 224-9655
Type: Land Line
Provider: Verizon
Location: Washington, DC

And this on yellowbook:

(202) 224-9655 is a land line based in Washington, DC
The registered service provider is Verizon**.
Detailed listing information is not available

Here is what came up in a search on Congress.org:

Your search - (202) 224-9655 - did not match any documents.

Suggestions:

* Make sure all words are spelled correctly.
* Try different keywords.
* Try more general keywords.
* Try fewer keywords.

Might be possible that the number is something like a dead-drop, an extra number paid for under the table contacts since there is no public listing of who it belongs to, probably out of the salary of the Senate office in question.

Hey, can anyone check to see if it goes back to before 1998, see how long this number has been in existence? If there is a definite date when it first popped up we can cross-reference it with who came into office when it was setup and get a list of suspects. I think this might be in use for more than just prostitution.

65. I mean the specific number, not just the block
At some point we would see when they assigned the number in question to someone, just because they have a whole block setup doesn't mean the specific number has always been there. If it shows up at some point we can attempt to cross-reference everything we know of when it first shows up in records.

113. Probably since area codes came into existence.
For the 202 area code, they probably assigned the shortest-pull exchanges available (223, 224) to Congress and other government agencies from the start.

The idea of short-pull was that with rotary phones you could dial those numbers more quickly. It takes about 5 seconds less to dial 224-xxxx than to dial 884-xxxx, for example.

This is getting pretty damn interesting. Two Senate phone numbers.

We need to call someone in the senate and make friends with them and get them to help us get an internal senate directory.

75. At my work, when you pick up the phone it goes to a bank of numbers and chooses one
Could that be what is happening here? The Senate has a pretty darn big phone system. There may be a huge bank of phone numbers for outgoing calls and when you hit the button for a line, it chooses one at Random. The OP wasn't clear if this was an incoming or outgoing call from this number.

77. Very possible
If it's inbound and it's a DID number they can figure out who it was.

As for an outbound call... not so sure.

This is Debra Palfrey calling a client to confirm a reservation or something. The incoming calls say clearly that they are "incoming".

People on this thread have pointed out the number was called on other dates. I don't think it is random.

88. UPDATE - UPDATE - UPDATE
Another Senate Phone Number for the DC Madam
Scores of readers have written to me with ideas on how to find out who was at the other end of the phone call between the DC Madam and a number in the U.S. Senate (see item below). Several have scoured old congressional directories--so far with no luck. But now we have a second chance. Another Senate number has been dug out of the phone records of Deborah Jeane Palfrey. Here it is:

202-224-9557

For those looking for a pattern, the first number after the 224 prefix is a 9--just like the first Senate number. This call was made on October 1, 1999 at 4:12 pm. It lasted for a minute and a half. The number is now disconnected. I encourage those who have searched congressional directories for the first number to add this number to their list--and look again. Send me your results at cornblog@hotmail.com.

But they're not searchable, really. I would have to sneak one home with me tonight.

If anyone has access to CQ, cqpress.com apparently has searchable directories online... don't know about the old versions tho.

Chris Dodd has the same number for the 110th as the 108th Congress. If we can't find 1998, more recent years might also prove fruitful assuming the Republican in question did not retire.

I suppose these two 9xxx (9655 and 9557) numbers could be fax numbers though. i assumed it would be a regular land line.
then were these people faxing things?

109. Haven't you ever seen a phone reciever on a fax machine???
Especially back in the 90's, almost every fax machine had a reciever. You could dial out and use just as you would a telephone, or you could answer the incoming call using the reciever, provided you knew the incoming call was voice, not a fax.
