Bush names nephew to Pan Am Games delegation

Despite having no discernible diplomatic or athletic credentials, George Prescott Bush, 31, was selected by his uncle, President George W. Bush, to be part of the official U.S. delegation that will attend the opening ceremony of the Pan American Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, the White House announced Tuesday.

George P. Bush is the son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R). In the White House announcement of the delegation he is listed as chief operating officer of the N3 (read N cubed) Opportunity Fund, a Texas-based real-estate investment company.

“The President occasionally designates family members to serve on delegations,” said Emily Lawrimore, who deals with personnel announcements in the White House. “He always selects people to serve on delegations who will represent him well at various international events.”

The delegation will be headed by Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt. It will also include United States Ambassador to Brazil Clifford Sobel, member of the president’s council on physical fitness Donna Richardson Joyner and former Major League Baseball player Luis Tiant.

Following in the baseball tradition of the Bush family, George P. Bush walked onto the Rice University baseball team as a freshman but did not continue on the team his sophomore year.

The Pan American Games are an international sporting event similar to the Olympics, but only countries in the Americas participate. This year Rio de Janeiro will play host to 42 countries competing in 41 sports.

George P. Bush did not return a call seeking comment at the time this article was published.

It was four in the morning and apparently he had not been invited. He broke into the house and began arguing with the woman's father. He then departed. But 15 to 20 minutes later, Bush, a Rice University student, was back. This time he drove his Ford Explorer over the front lawn, causing damage. The father contacted the police, and a Miami-Dade police officer called on George P. and his parents that night. But as the subsequent police report noted, George P. "was not arrested on the scene" because the woman's father did not want to press charges. The report also said that George P. and this woman broke up a year and a half earlier and that Bush "has been a problem ever since."
