Govt Website: Abortions Make Women Feel ‘Sad,’ Resort To ‘Drugs’ And ‘Alcohol’

Yesterday, NARAL discovered that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) had revised a government website, 4parents.gov, with biased and misleading ideological claims about abortion. From new website:

Some teen pregnancies end in abortion. Abortions can have complications. There may be emotional consequences, as well: some women say that they feel sad and some use more alcohol or drugs than before.

The previous version of the site contained factual information about the rates of teen pregnancy. But these new “facts” on the site are misleading. As the Guttmacher Institute’s May 2006 report noted:

{T}he APA {American Psychological Association} found that “women who are terminating pregnancies that are wanted or who lack support from their partner or parents for the abortion may feel a greater sense of loss, anxiety and distress. For most women, however, the time of greatest distress is likely to be before an abortion; after an abortion, women frequently report feeling ‘relief and happiness.’”

There is no “right” way to feel after an abortion, and it is not HHS’s role to highlight information implying that women regret having abortions. Women feel a “range of emotions after an abortion, such as relief, sadness, happiness and feelings of loss.” “It is outrageous that the department charged with providing Americans objective information about health is disguising unproven political rhetoric as sound science,” noted NARAL president Nancy Keenan.

This is not the first time 4parents.gov has put forth misleading information. When the site launched in 2005, it told parents “to convince their teens to stop having sex by telling their children that they are ‘worth it.’” But no resources were provided for “parents whose teen remains sexually active, implying that these youth are not ‘worth it.’” It also referred to a “fetus” as an “unborn baby.”

Yesterday, Richard Carmona told Congress that when he served as Bush’s Surgeon General, he was often muzzled and censored from speaking out on key issues, such as stem cell research and women’s issues. “Anything that doesn’t fit into the political appointees’ ideological, theological, or political agenda is ignored, marginalized, or simply buried,” said Carmona.

See the previous version of the website:

4. Well, I'm way beyond the age where I have to worry about getting
an abortion, but this administration makes me feel sad, resort to alcohol, but I haven't done drugs YET!

If I wasn't such a chicken and scared of getting involved in the ciolence and crime of drugs, they'd have driven me to that too!

5. Oh really? I've known 5 women who have terminated pregnancies
and none of them turned to anything negative. They all felt they had made the right decision then and still do now.

6. Oh, for the honesty of Koop
who was supposed to come out with the definitive study that said women who rid their bodies of unwanted pregnancies were mentally ill for the rest of their lives, wracked with remorse. Koop did the study and was too honest to lie about the results that revealed the main emotion women feel after an abortion is RELIEF.

Honestly, if these Christians don't stop lying their piggy asses off, people are going to desert Christianity in droves, looking for a little honesty in their lives.

Considering where the Jesus in the NT was at, I think that might be a real shame.

9. "Some women say"? How many is "some"?
They want to end abortion thru abstinence because children are a woman's punishment for sex, but they don't want to spend a dime on daycare or healthcare which really would enable women to keep their babies.

Hypocritical slime. What they want is a steady supply of desperate teenage girls to become the next generation of prostitutes because they have nowhere else to turn.

12. Right. And having your 5th kid from an abusive husband when your financially broke
is a barrel of laughs.

Then we can talk about the husband who has to raise his kids with no mother cause of her having to resort to a freaking coat hanger.

18. I Had An Abortion
It made me sad. That's just the truth. Having a baby would have made me MUCH sadder. I would have killed myself if I had not been able to have an abortion. ...and in the same circumstances I would do the same thing. ...and there was a lot of relief when it was over.

I hate these government people.

20. And so bloody what if it did?
Pregnancy and its termination, by whatever method (spontaneous or induced abortion, or eventual paturation) is going to mess with a woman's hormones to a greater or lesser degree. It's a physical condition. Treat it if necessary.

22. What

And forcing a women to bare a child she does not want does what again? Abortion is a safe, normal medical procedure. I have known several young women who got them (not me). The only thing they were Ever concerned about was the goddamn pro-life protesters

23. Alcohol was a contributing factor in the unintended pregnancy I aborted.
Got drunk, had unprotected sex, got pregnant. I was 25, should have known better. Had I not been able to get a safe, legal abortion, who knows what the outcome would have been? I was in no condition to raise a child at that point; and that child most likely would have suffered from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

No, I was not "happy" to have to make that choice, but I am grateful that I DID have a choice and I have never, ever regretted that decision.

Yes, the father knew about the pregnancy and agreed that the abortion was the right choice. We later married and had a child together; he left when the baby was 6 months old -- after 5 years of marriage he decided he was "in love" with someone else.
