My son asked me "What's irony?"
Edited on Thu Jul-12-07 01:10 AM by Mythsaje
I fished for a good explanation at the time. I can't remember exactly HOW I put it together for him, but I think I got it across.

And here, today, I am confronted by a perfect example of irony.

DUers are condemning Cindy Sheehan and cheering Larry Flynt, of all people. (I have to admit that Larry has financed some pretty good investigative journalism in the past, as did Bob Guccionne from Penthouse).

But Hustler is one of the sleeziest skin mags on the market. Always has been, and unabashedly so. It's ironic to see DUers cheering the guy who publishes it, however rightfully.

Excuse me while I go off to chuckle to myself for a while.

On edit: In case you missed my Cindy thread

1. It is ironic.
A pornographer is our moral compass, our conscience?

I can't say I like it, but it is funny to see the hypocrites try to come up with excuses.

He will snare some Democrats, too, I am sure. Then the repukes will howl righteously, and try to distract us when we point out that some of them have done the same thing.

2. Define irony
I immediately think of Ethan Hawke in Reality Bites. His character, Troy Dyer, says,"It's when the actual meaning is the complete opposite from the literal meaning."

12. That sounds SO much like a Buffyism...
Or, more accurately, a Xanderism.

14. Not surprising...
I used to watch Black Adder...some I liked better than others.

Some of the humor on Buffy had a distinct British dryness to it.

anti-hypocrisy stance, There is no generic "DUer." There are two distinct factions. I respect both Flynt and Sheehan, and some others damn them both. Both, in my view, demand honesty, while others here condemn them both for telling their core truths and exposing the failures of out representatives" to do the right things. An interesting poll possibility - I'm again unemployed tomorrow, so maybe I'll give it a shot and see if I am right about those factions.

4. This is a Democratic website and Cindy is challenging the Democratic speaker
Cindy needs to get real job, very soon, and return to the reality-based world. She is a good person but is off-her-hinge right now.

8. Actually I think a better example is
cheering for a publisher of a porn magazine (it has more than just dirty pics in it like Playboy, much more a sex magazine) while cheering the takedown of members of Congress in a sex scandal.

Sort of a weird way to do both but Larry Flynt always finds a way.

Either way I personally don't consider prostitution a problem, I personally believe it should be legalized and regulated. I consider the hypocrisy the bigger issue, especially for the ones getting caught that are married and that condemned Clinton for it.

As for Cindy, I have no problem with her protesting and pressuring Conyers like many here. Conyers seemed the champion we wanted in charge of investigations during the 2006 midterms but he has backed down a bit here and there, this Sunday he said he didn't plan on filing contempt of congress onto the Bush Administration if they kept stonewalling him. He said he would just reissue subpoenas and hope they would come to their senses, which we all know can't happen when you don't have sense to begin with.

I also have no problem with her pressuring Nancy Pelosi because she has been rather inactive in doing what the American people asked of her when they gave her the Congressional Majority.

I personally doubt Sheehan can win but it will give a bit of a shake to the beltway crowd who are way too comfortable with the way things work and need a shakeup from the grassroots.

Are her comments over the top and factually incorrect? Of course. But I think she is not politically trained and she speaks without a filter and sometimes it makes her point one huge clusterfucked argument. Either way it's not as if our Democratic leaders couldn't use a nice big reality check because since they got into office, too many of them have forgotten exactly why they were put there and the people at home who did so have been way too ignored.

9. I'm pretty much on the same page about Cindy...
Edited on Thu Jul-12-07 03:07 AM by Mythsaje
In fact, I made a comment on another thread regarding her needing a speech writer. The GIST of her statement wasn't all that far off, in my opinion, but the way she put it together ruined the whole presentation.

I said nearly the same thing in my post, but with more nuance, which is what I think her statement lacked.

11. The presence of a perfectly appropriate, yet unintended target of a thought...
