Turkish Ambassador to US: Turkey cannot rule out any alternative in fight against terror

The New Anatolian with wire services

12 July 2007

The Turkish Ambassador to the United States Nabi Sensoy said Wednesday that U.S.-made weapons are falling into the hands of PKK terrorists staging attacks in Turkey.

Sensoy did not suggest that the U.S. has been supplying the the PKK directly but he accused Kurdish members of the Iraqi government of allowing the terrorist group to operate in northern Iraq and to stage cross-border attacks in Turkey.

"The U.S. is not doing enough to influence the Kurdish politicians in key positions in the Iraqi government to crack down on the PKK," Sensoy said.

Ambassador Sensoy declined to comment on reports by Iraqi officials that Turkey has amassed 140,000 troops along the border. He explained that Turkish forces are taking normal precautions within Turkish territory of Turkey, but did not rule out a military response to PKK, saying, "I cannot say Turkey would be able to rule out any alternative in the fight against the terrorists."

The PKK terrorists, have escalated attacks recently on Turkish targets. The Turkish military has intensified anti-terrorist operations against the terrorists in the country's southeast, on the border with Iraq. The military also established "temporary security zones" in several areas close to the border with Iraq amid increasing activity there. The security zones, imposed in areas inside the provinces of Sirnak, Siirt and Hakkari, ban civilian overflights and impose stricter checks on entry and exit points to the regions.

1. Theoretically only the Iraqi Army is allowed to have military weapons.
The fact that (if this is true) the Kurdish militias are armed with US weapons indicates that (shock and surprise) we don't give a flying fuck about the official Iraqi government.

There are children at the cannons

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFowNFvmUxw

I've been waiting for something to happen
For a week or a month or a year
With the blood in the ink of the headlines
And the sound of the crowd in my ear
You might ask what it takes to remember
When you know that you've seen it before
Where a government lies to a people
And a country is drifting to war

And there's a shadow on the faces
Of the men who send the guns
To the wars that are fought in places
Where their business interest runs

On the radio talk shows and the t.v.
You hear one thing again and again
How the u.s.a. stands for freedom
And we come to the aid of a friend
But who are the ones that we call our friends--
These governments killing their own?
Or the people who finally can't take any more
And they pick up a gun or a brick or a stone
There are lives in the balance
There are people under fire
There are children at the cannons
And there is blood on the wire

Theres a shadow on the faces
Of the men who fan the flames
Of the wars that are fought in places
Where we cant even say the names

They sell us the president the same way
They sell us our clothes and our cars
They sell us every thing from youth to religion
The same time they sell us our wars
I want to know who the men in the shadows are
I want to hear somebody asking them why
They can be counted on to tell us who our enemies are
But they're never the ones to fight or to die
And there are lives in the balance
There are people under fire
There are children at the cannons
And there is blood on the wire

Doomsday Clock

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skV5N4hN2qo

Is everyone afraid?
Is everyone ashamed?
Their running torwards their holes to find out
Apocalyptic thieves
Are lost amongst our dead
A message to our friends, to get out

There's wagers on this fear
Ooh, ooh so clear
Depends on what you'll pay to hear

They're bound to kill us all
In white-washed halls
The jackals lick their paws

Please don't stop
It's lonely at the top
These lonely days
Will they ever stop?
This doomsday clock
Tickin' in my heart, not broken

I love life everyday, each and every way
Khafka would be proud to find out
I'm certain of the end, it's the means that has me spooked
It takes an unknown truth to get out
I guess that I'm born free, c'est le ve
I was meant to beg from my knees

Please don't stop
It's lonely at the top
These lonely days
Will they ever stop?
This doomsday clock
Tickin' in my heart
These lonely days, will they ever stop?

Gotta dig in
Gasmasks on
Wait in the sunshine overhead
If this is living, sakes alive
Well then we can't win, no one survives

Is everyone afraid?
You should be ashamed
Apocalyptic screams mean nothing to the dead
Kiss your little son to know all there is
C'mon, last call!
You should want it all!

It's lonely at the top
These lonely days, will they ever stop
This doomsday clock
These lonely days, will they ever stop
It's tickin' in my heart
Is everyone afraid?

4. I think that.
I am merely pointing out the crass and obvious hypocrisy of our government. Of course the Iraqis have to help themselves and take care of the mess we have made of their country. We need to get out and leave them alone. The world needs to demand that we do that and that we pay for the damages done.

7. Would you suggest we stay in Iraq to protect the Kurds?
Are you suggesting that we should have stayed in Vietnam to protect the Hmong?

3. Turkey considers a terrorist organization
http://mnweekly.ru/columnists/20070607/55257108.html

Turkey, a NATO ally, has not only closed off its border with Iraqi Kurdistan, but Turkish Army units have moved deeper into Iraqi territory in an effort to eliminate the bases of the separatist Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which Turkey considers a terrorist organization.

Ankara cites a Turkish-Iraqi agreement to fight the PKK, which was signed in 1996 with the Saddam Hussein regime. The authorities of the Kurdish autonomy have strongly protested the Turkish invasion, which from every indication Washington was unable to prevent. Will the Kurds in this situation remain a force on which the U.S., alongside the Shiites, can continue to rely in Iraq?

The U.S. has established contacts with Iranian authorities over the situation in Iraq. That is good. But at the same time, President Bush continues his relentless pressure on Iran, and not only with words: U.S. Navy strike groups have been amassed in the Persian Gulf, but such muscle-flexing seems to be ineffectual since Iran is gradually emerging from isolation. Ali Larijani, the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, met recently with EU High Representative on the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana. The two sides expressed their satisfaction with the "constructive" negotiations and agreed to continue them. In another important development, Turkey and Iran recently reached an agreement on energy supplies and joint construction of dams and hydro electric power stations.

How far can U.S. maneuvering go in this situation?
