Vt. flooded - Barre in state of emergency

this from a RSOE HAVARIA email alert

Torrential rains pelted central Vermont Wednesday, triggering flash flooding that washed out roads and inundated the city of Barre, where water was reportedly running up to 6 feet deep in parts of downtown. Street flooding was reported in Hardwick, Woodbury, Randolph and Bethel, but the worst of it was in Barre, where the Stevens Branch of the Winooski River overflowed its banks, forcing the closing of portions of Route 302. Barre Police said the city is not passable and that people were being asked to evacuate to the Barre Auditorium, which sits on a hill. Roads are closed and the city has asked that the Vermont Emergency Management department send in the National Guard. The Weather Service says a cold front on the heels of a band of thunderstorms unleashed major rain across the region, including 3.7 inches in Brookfield, 4.4 inches in North Calais and 3.8 in Randolph Center. State Of Emergency Declared In Barre.

MDOT: Three highways between Maine, New Hampshire washed out

11:07 AM BETHEL — Heavy rains washed out three highways between Maine and New Hampshire, creating headaches for motorists Thursday morning and bringing to mind the old saying, "You can't get there from here."

It was no joke for travelers following the closing of U.S. 2 in Gilead, Route 26 in Grafton Notch and Route 113 in Evans Notch, all important highways for Mainers trying to get to New Hampshire's White Mountains.

The problem was heavy rain Wednesday that stretched from Vermont to western Maine, said George Wiseman of the National Weather Service in Maine.

With all three roads out, people have no practical way to get to jobs and services on the other side of the border, plus this area is the eastern section of the White Mountains area and the notchs are popular summer tourist destinations for hikers and campers -- there could be quite a significant economic impact if the roads aren't opened soon.
