House Panel Clears Way For Contempt Proceedings Against Harriet Miers (AP)
Executive privilege battle intensifies over Bush's refusal to let Miers talk
Associated Press - July 12, 2007 12:03 PM ET

CAPITOL HILL (AP) - A House panel has cleared the way for contempt proceedings against former White House counsel Harriet Miers.

Miers today obeyed an order from President Bush and did not appear at a House Judiciary subcommittee hearing. Miers had been subpoenaed to testify about the firing of 8 federal prosecutors.

Addressing the empty chair, the panel's chair, Congresswoman Linda Sanchez, ruled that White House claims of executive privilege were out of order. Current White House counsel Fred Fielding has asserted that executive privilege gives Miers "absolute" immunity.

The subcommittee voted 7 to 5 to sustain Sanchez's ruling.

1. And to think she might have been a Supreme Court justice...now
she's just a common criminal.

5. I'm getting confused
Please don't jump on me. Are both judiciary committees having hearings on the USA firings? Yesterday, Conyers was doing the Libby confirmation, and Leahy was doing the USA firings.

I guess it's nice that we have so much going on that I'm confused. :)

6. Libby's case was connected to the Plam affair, not the attorney firings.

8. Right, that's why I'm confused
Attorney firings was in the Senate yesterday. It's in the House today?

Not that I mind. Just trying to keep on top of things.

11. Bush's problem with Miers is that people who know her say she will not lie under oath...
You know that is unacceptable to BushCo.

Cannot have her 'going off the reservation' and telling the truth about what went on.

So you keep her from showing up. To be sure.

12. Did you see the part where the GOPer objected to this
on the grounds Dems should stop being so nasty to the WH. Treat them nicer with more respect.

14. Also, they used some convoluted logic....
........regarding the "two prongs" needed to enforce a subpoena for Harriet Miers' testimony.

1. Evidence of a crime......as if all that has gone on doesn't at least meet probable cause - good old fashioned bullshit.

2. This is where it gets convoluded.......They say the committee shouldn't be allowed to subpoena IF information and due diligence is available from another source.......What would that source be, you ask? Harriet Miers......but not under oath and on the record. In other words, the other source isn't actually another source. It's Harriet Miers appearing without the threat of perjury IF SHE LIES. It's the White house dictating how Congress conducts its own business. It's the White Hose saying - Trust us.

Fuck them.

15. It boggles the mind that half of the members of the investigative committee
are the exact same people who sit in on the weekly GOP strategy meetings during which the DoJ had to be a constant topic of discussion during the last six years.

So not only are they group participants in the crimes they are investigating, they can report investigative committee discussions back to the GOP weekly strategy group.
